Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that requires an individualized treatment approach.

Not all dark spots are the same—and treating them starts with understanding the cause.

In this reel, Physician Assistant Brittany Alce discusses Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH), a common concern in patients with skin of color.

PIH occurs when inflammation or skin injury triggers excess melanin production, leaving behind dark spots after the skin heals. Common causes include acne, eczema, insect bites, cuts, burns, and picking at the skin. Because deeper skin tones naturally produce more melanin, they’re more likely to develop noticeable, longer-lasting pigmentation after inflammation.

Treatment options may include medical-grade skincare, prescription topicals, chemical peels, microneedling, laser treatments such as Aerolase®, and daily sunscreen to help prevent further discoloration.
