HIGH CHOLESTEROL
Know Your Numbers. Protect Your Heart.

What Is High Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your blood. Your body needs some cholesterol, but too much can build up in your arteries and increase your risk of:
❤️ Heart attack
❤️ Stroke
❤️ Peripheral artery

High cholesterol is often referred to as a "silent condition"; most people experience no symptoms. A simple blood test can help detect it early.

Know Your Numbers
Test Healthy Goal
Total Cholesterol: Less than 200 mg/dL
LDL ("Bad") Cholesterol: Less than 100 mg/dL
HDL ("Good") Cholesterol: 60–80 mg/dL or higher
Triglycerides: Less than 150 mg/dL
Understanding Cholesterol
LDL (Bad Cholesterol): Builds plaque inside arteries.
HDL (Good Cholesterol): Helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Triglycerides: High levels can also contribute to artery narrowing.

What Causes High Cholesterol?
Diet
Foods high in saturated fats and trans fats
Excess sugar and highly processed foods
Lifestyle
Lack of physical activity
Obesity
Smoking or to***co use
Excess alcohol intake
Genetics
Inherited conditions such as Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) can cause high cholesterol even with healthy habits.
Medical Conditions
Type 2 diabetes
Kidney disease
Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
Cardio-kidney-metabolic syndrome
HIV infection
Cancer history or current cancer diagnosis

Healthy Habits That Lower Cholesterol
Eat Heart-Healthy Foods
Choose more:

Avoid To***co Products
Smoking lowers good cholesterol (HDL) and damages blood vessels.
Prioritize Sleep
Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Manage Other Health Conditions
Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol under control.

Screening Recommendations
Adults (Age 19 and Older)
✔ Cholesterol panel including:

May be helpful for people with:
High triglycerides
Type 2 diabetes
Metabolic syndrome
Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Scan
May be considered for:
Men age 40 and older
Women age 45 and older
This test helps detect early plaque buildup when treatment decisions are uncertain.
Children Need Screening Too
High cholesterol can begin in childhood.
Children ages 9–11 years should have cholesterol screening if they have not already been tested.
Talk with your child's health care provider if there is a family history of:
High cholesterol
Heart disease
Stroke
Special Considerations for Women
Certain pregnancy and reproductive conditions can increase future heart disease risk.
Share your pregnancy and reproductive history with your health care team and know your:
Cholesterol numbers
Blood pressure
Blood sugar
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Medications May Be Needed
Lifestyle changes are the first step, but some people also need cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins.

If you experience side effects, speak with your health care provider. Other treatment options are available.
Do not stop medications without discussing them with your provider.

Important Reminder About Supplements
Dietary supplements are not recommended for cholesterol management.

Understanding Diabetes: A Guide to Better Health:

What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body uses blood sugar (glucose), which is the body's main source of energy. Diabetes occurs when your body cannot properly produce or use insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from your bloodstream into your cells. When insulin is not working correctly, blood sugar levels rise and can lead to serious health complications if left unmanaged.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to survive.

Type 2 Diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin. This is the most common type of diabetes and is often managed with healthy lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes insulin therapy.

Gestational Diabetes:
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. While it often resolves after childbirth, it increases the mother's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Managing Diabetes Successfully:
Effective diabetes management requires a combination of healthy lifestyle choices and prescribed medical treatments.

Healthy Eating:
A balanced diet can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Focus on:
Whole grains
Lean proteins
Fresh vegetables
Healthy fats
Limiting sugary foods and beverages
Some individuals may benefit from carbohydrate counting, especially those using insulin.

Physical Activity:
Regular exercise helps the body use insulin more effectively and lowers blood sugar levels. Even a simple 10-minute walk after meals can make a significant difference.

Medications:
Take all medications exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Treatment options may include:
Oral diabetes medications
Injectable medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists
Insulin therapy

Diabetes Education:
Diabetes self-management education programs can help you learn practical skills for monitoring blood sugar, meal planning, medication management, and preventing complications.

Monitoring Your Blood Sugar:
Regular monitoring helps you understand how food, activity, medications, and stress affect your blood sugar levels.

Glucose Meters
Traditional blood glucose meters require a finger-stick blood sample and provide a snapshot of your current blood sugar level.

Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)
CGMs are wearable devices that continuously monitor glucose levels throughout the day and night. They can provide real-time alerts for high and low blood sugar levels.
A1C Testing
The A1C test measures your average blood sugar over the previous 2–3 months and helps assess your overall diabetes control.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Contact your healthcare provider or seek emergency medical care if you experience:
Severe Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)

Common symptoms include::
Shaking
Sweating
Dizziness
Confusion
Loss of consciousness
Seek emergency help if you are unable to eat or drink safely or become unconscious.
High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia)
Call your healthcare provider if your blood sugar remains consistently high despite following your treatment plan.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) – Medical Emergency
Symptoms may include:
Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Nausea or vomiting
Fruity-smelling breath
Severe fatigue
Confusion

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if these symptoms occur.
Foot Wounds or Infections
Any foot sore, redness, swelling, or wound that does not heal promptly should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to prevent serious complications.

Tips for Daily Success:
✔ Take medications as prescribed
✔ Check blood sugar regularly
✔ Stay physically active
✔ Follow a healthy eating plan
✔ Attend regular healthcare appointments
✔ Perform daily foot inspections
✔ Stay hydrated and manage stress

🚨 Hypertensive Crisis Higher than 180 and/or 120
Top Number (Systolic): Pressure when your heart beats.
Bottom Number (Diastolic): Pressure when your heart rests.

When to Seek Emergency Care:

A blood pressure reading above 180/120 mm Hg is a medical emergency.
Call 911 immediately if you also experience:
Chest pain
Severe headache
Blurred vision
Shortness of breath
Numbness or weakness
Difficulty speaking

Why Blood Pressure Control Matters:
