When your teenager is struggling with their mental health, substance use, or behavioral challenges, figuring out how to help can feel overwhelming.
There are so many opinions about what parents should do, what kind of help works, and when it’s time to take the next step.
And while there’s no shortage of advice out there, not all advice is equally helpful.
Sometimes the difference between good advice and better advice is knowing what questions to ask, understanding your options, and recognizing that what works for one teenager may not work for another.
A few things we encourage parents to remember:
💚 Don’t wait for things to reach a crisis. You don’t need to have all the answers or even know exactly what’s going on before reaching out for guidance.
đź’š Look beyond the behavior. Anger, withdrawal, defiance, and changes in attitude can sometimes be signs that something deeper is happening.
đź’š Be involved in the process. Whether your teen is seeing a therapist or receiving more intensive treatment, parents have an important role in understanding the recommendations, asking questions, and supporting progress at home.
💚 Be willing to change your approach. If something isn’t working, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It may simply mean your teenager needs a different kind of support.
Helping a struggling teenager isn’t about finding one perfect answer. It’s about continuing to learn, staying involved, and being willing to make adjustments along the way.
At Lotus Behavioral Health, we believe parents deserve guidance and support, too. Because when families have the right tools and resources, they are better equipped to help their teens move forward.
Hope. Love. Heal. đź’š
