The Hummingbird

I don't remember when I bought the feeder or the day I hung it by the window, right in front of my soft yellow sofa and in a way that allows me to see the foliage of my plants. My dream was simple: to see fluttering wings greeting me. The hummingbird is the smallest migratory bird that travels alone—my preference—covering up to 300 miles on each journey.

Because of the cacophony of their wings, the rapid, buzzing flutter, they are called hummingbirds. What would they call me for the buzzing of my heart? Humming Girl? No, I'm a little too old for that. Like the hummingbirds, my memory flies backward. Unlike them, my sense of smell is keen. They compensate with excellent eyesight, but I, well, I sniff out feeders that nourish my soul; unfortunately, I don't see evil at first glance. I know, I know, I shouldn't give them red water, as I might do more harm than good.

My true aspiration? To wake up to a brilliant bouquet of flowers floating above my sadness: a flock of hummingbirds stirring my grief.
