SEPTEMBER SMILES 😊 |
A 4-WEEK SERIES FROM ONLY SMILES DENTAL

We smile every day, but have you ever stopped to think about what happens when you do?

A smile can influence how we feel, how others perceive us, and even how we connect with the people around us. And while we often think of oral health as being about healthy teeth and gums, your smile is also an important part of how you communicate and show up in the world.

This September, Only Smiles Dental is taking four Wednesdays to explore some of the small, but surprisingly impactful, things your smile can do.

Each week, we'll share one simple neuroscience nugget, one practical tip, and one small action you can try.

Because caring for your oral health isn't just about maintaining your teeth. It's about maintaining a healthy smile you're comfortable sharing.

Join us every Wednesday in September with a new post for September Smiles: Your Smile Does More Than You Think.😊

The Power of Sleep... Did You Know?

Getting 7–9 hours of sleep each night doesn't just help you feel rested, it also supports a healthier smile!

While you sleep, your body works to reduce inflammation, strengthen your immune system, and repair tissues. That includes your gums! Consistently getting enough sleep may help lower your risk of gum disease and support better healing.

Poor sleep, on the other hand, can contribute to:
β€’ Increased inflammation in the gums
β€’ Dry mouth (which raises the risk of cavities and bad breath)
β€’ Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
β€’ Cravings for sugary foods that can harm your teeth

Healthy habits go hand in hand:
β€’β€’ Brush before bed.
β€’β€’ Floss daily.
β€’β€’ Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.

A good night's sleep is one of the simplest ways to support both your overall health and your oral health. Your body and smile will thank you!

Summer schedules are fun, but now it's time to get back into healthy habits!

Help your child remember:
πŸͺ₯ Brush twice a day for 2 minutes
🧡 Floss once daily
πŸ’§ Drink water throughout the day

These simple routines can keep smiles healthy all school year long.

🐢❀️ Happy National Dog Day! ❀️🐢

Today we're celebrating the amazing dogs who fill our lives with unconditional love. Swipe through to meet some of our staff's beloved pups. 🐾 (Meet Casper, Choco, Almond and Bruno (bench photo), Mazie, Molly, Twills, Lilly, Kurama, and Dasher!)

Those happy smiles deserve a little extra attention, too! Just like people, dogs can develop plaque, tartar, bad breath, and dental disease if their teeth aren't properly cared for. Regular brushing, dental chews, and routine veterinary dental checkups can help keep your best friend's mouth healthy and their tail wagging for years to come.

Share a photo of your pup in the comments and tell us their name as we'd love to see all of those adorable faces and bright smiles!

Happy National Dog Day from our team and our four-legged family members!

Quick Dental Tip

To get the most benefit from fluoride toothpaste or fluoride mouthwash, spit, don't rinse.

After brushing or using a fluoride rinse:

βœ… Spit out the excess.
❌ Don't rinse your mouth with water afterward.

Leaving a thin layer of fluoride on your teeth gives it more time to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavities. For the best results, avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes after using fluoride products.

Did you know a tongue tie can affect more than just speech or feeding?

A restricted tongue can contribute to mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, teeth grinding, and poor sleep quality in both children and adults. When the tongue can't rest properly against the roof of the mouth, it may impact healthy airway development and breathing patterns.

At Only Smiles Dental, we offer FREE tongue tie evaluations to help determine whether a tongue tie may be part of the bigger picture.

If you or your child experiences chronic mouth breathing, snoring, or disrupted sleep, we're here to help.

Grab-and-Go Fruits That Are Smile-Friendly for School & Work!

Need a quick snack that's easy to pack and kind to your teeth? These fruits are great choices:

🍎 Apples – Crunchy and refreshing! They help stimulate saliva, which naturally rinses your mouth.

🍐 Pears – Low in acid and high in water, making them a gentle choice for your teeth.

🍌 Bananas – Soft, filling, and less acidic than many other fruits.

🫐 Blueberries – Easy to toss in a container and packed with antioxidants. Rinse with water afterward since they can stain teeth.

πŸ“ Strawberries – Naturally sweet and full of vitamin C. Enjoy them as part of a balanced snack.

πŸ‡ Grapes – Portable, juicy, and a convenient lunchbox favorite.

πŸ’‘ Smile Tip: Pair fruit with cheese, plain yogurt, or a handful of unsalted nuts for a more tooth-friendly snack. Drinking water after eating also helps wash away food particles and sugars.

Healthy snacks help fuel your day and keeping your smile healthy is a bonus!
