Today is the anniversary of Olmstead v. L.C., the Supreme Court decision that affirmed the right of people with disabilities to live in their communities. And today, that right is at risk.

A new Department of Justice opinion says the federal government may stop enforcing one of the strongest protections people with disabilities have against institutionalization.

This opinion doesn’t erase Olmstead or take away the regulations that protect community living. But it’s dangerous because rights mean less when the federal government refuses to enforce them.

Our Senior Executive Officer Shira Wakschlag, told NPR: “This opinion is a direct threat to decades of progress toward community living for people with disabilities. People with disabilities shouldn't be forced into institutions because a state refuses to provide services in the community.”

Olmstead has helped millions be a part of their communities and live the lives they choose. We cannot go backward.

Today my body gave up.
It seems to once a month (lines up with hormone garbage).

Intense fatigue, aches, light-headedness, muscle heaviness, fogginess, breathing that’s not the best. Very little useable brain.

I spent most of the day in bed.
Because I didn’t have much choice.

Rest and coregulation were pretty much it today.
Darkness. Water. Pain meds. Sleep. Cuddles.
No demands.
It was a yuck day.

Our kids need ways to tell us when they have days like this.
Sometimes the words are hard.

Visuals can make it easier.
Make sure you have them?

Ever since the federal bill changing SNAP and Medicaid passed, people have reached out asking: What will this mean for me? There is no short answer for this one. H.R.1 (also called the "big beautiful bill) shifts costs to the state, adds new administrative costs, and makes changes to eligibility that could mean some people don't get services, or will lose them if they don't keep up with reporting requirements. Our state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) released this overview of major changes and the timeline for when they take effect.
