The after lunch crash has a famous explanation: blood leaves your brain for your stomach. Researchers now know that one is not accurate.
The tiredness itself is real. Sleep tests show it rises after eating and peaks one to two hours later, and it is stronger after a large meal. What is actually behind it is a combination: signals from your gut, changes in glucose and amino acids, and shifts in your brain's arousal pathways. Your body clock has its own early afternoon dip on top of that.
Do not drive or operate machinery while it hits. And if it comes with dizziness, shakiness or confusion, raise it with a doctor.
When does yours usually hit?
