Ruminating is different from honoring.

Ruminating is the loop — replaying the loss, spiraling down, the day arriving like a weight.

Honoring is choosing what the day means now. It's remembering the joy on purpose. It's saying: though the future we pictured is unrealized, the loving we shared was real.

And here's the reframe I offer to people:

Not only was that loving good enough for the relationship — that loving is good enough for me beyond the relationship.

Anniversaries will come. Holidays will come. You can meet them ruminating, or you can meet them reclaiming. One spirals you down. The other spirals you up in your loving.

Which one are you practicing this week? 💛

There is no timeline on your grief.

I need somebody to hear this today. Not the "stages." Not your family's timeline. Not the pressure of "it's been a year."

The loss of a spouse may take five years to navigate. The loss of a relationship that didn't work may take ten. For some of us, a lifetime. That is not brokenness — that is the depth of what you shared refusing to be rushed.

The goal was never to "get over it" on schedule. The goal is to learn to move WITH it, so the grief doesn't shut your life down.

Be gentle enough with yourself to find your own timeline. That gentleness has a name: self-compassion. And it's a skill — one you can learn. Mine was made so much easier with my little fur babies teaching me that every minute of the day is precious. 💛

Why do we smell their clothes?

The sweatshirt in the closet. The pillow. You already know the ritual — you pull it out, you hold it to your face.

Here's what's actually happening: you're not being "dramatic." You're inhaling their DNA. Their pheromones are still in the fabric, and your brain lights up like they just walked in the room. The memory center activates. The pleasure center follows. For a moment, they're back.

That's why it's so hard to let the clothes go.

If you've lost someone, I'm not going to tell you to throw anything away. I offer this instead: when the grief is paralyzing, pack the clothes away for a while — not forever, just until you're strong enough that the memory becomes an honoring instead of an undoing.

You can access them again when they bless you more than they break you. 💛

You can be IN a relationship and still be in relationship grief.

Let me qualify that, because I know it sounds strange.

Some of us are grieving the relationship we expected to have — inside the relationship we actually have. The partnership we imagined at this stage of our lives. The closeness we hoped for. The future we pictured that hasn't been realized.

And because nobody taught us this counts as grief, we call it anger. We call it "checking out." We feel the activation and don't know what it's signaling.

If you've been feeling that pull of wanting to not engage — sometimes that's not a failing relationship or a cold heart. It's grief that was never given a name.

And what has a name can be tended to. 💛

"Why do I keep attracting the same person over and over again?"

I hear this all the time. And I want to offer you something that might sting a little, in the loving way truth does:

Sometimes you're not attracting. You're seeking.

When a relationship ends, your brain doesn't understand that it's over. It's still wired for the dopamine, the oxytocin — the chemistry you shared with that person. So it sends you out looking for someone familiar. Someone whose energy matches the very thing you swore you were done with.

That's not a character flaw. That's an addiction the body never got to detox from.

And you can't detox by replacing. You detox by nurturing yourself back to wholeness — so the next love you choose is chosen from health, not from hunger. 💛
