A lot of athletes learned how to push through before they learned how to feel.
Being mentally tough doesn’t mean you stop feeling.
And it definitely doesn’t mean you have to shut your emotions off.
There’s a difference between:
“This is hard, but I can handle it.”
and
“I don’t feel anything because I can’t afford to.”
Mental toughness is being able to feel disappointment, frustration, fear, pressure - and still respond intentionally.
These feelings are natural reactions in sport.
You win some. You lose some. You get injured. You experience setbacks.
However, emotional shutdown is disconnecting from those feelings altogether.
One builds resilience.
The other can leave you disconnected from yourself.
And as athletes, we’re often praised for being “tough” when what we really needed was permission to feel.
Being strong doesn’t mean feeling less.
It means learning how to handle what you feel.
Save this if you needed the reminder today.
