The meniscus is a special type of cartilage in the knee called fibrocartilage that helps absorb shock and provide stability. Each knee has two menisci, the medial meniscus on the inside and the lateral meniscus on the outside. Their job is to help distribute force, protect the joint surfaces, and improve movement mechanics. Meniscus injuries are one of the most common knee injuries seen in sports and active individuals. The medial meniscus is the most commonly injured because it is less mobile and attached more firmly to surrounding structures. Twisting, pivoting, deep squatting, or sudden changes in direction can increase the risk of injury. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, locking, clicking, or a feeling that the knee is giving out. Physical therapy can help reduce pain and swelling while improving mobility and strength around the knee. Rehab also focuses on balance, stability, and correcting movement patterns to safely return to activity. Early treatment and a structured rehab plan can make a huge difference in recovery and long-term knee health.
