Patient safety continues to advance globally.

Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) has issued a National Patient Safety Alert calling on all HSE and HSE-funded healthcare organizations to standardize the use of NRFit® connectors for intrathecal, epidural, and regional block procedures.

The alert directs organizations to replace universal Luer connectors with NRFit® devices to help reduce the risk of wrong-route medication errors. Healthcare organizations have 24 months from the alert's publication to complete the transition, with full implementation required by November 26, 2027.

GEDSA applauds this important step toward improving patient safety and reducing the risk of tubing misconnections.

GEDSA’s Survey Results Series:

Did you know that as of May 2024, nearly half (48%) of surveyed healthcare organizations had already converted to ENFit®? An additional 16% were in the process of converting, and 11% were planning to convert.

This finding comes from GEDSA’s Anonymous Tubing Misconnection and Near Miss Survey for Clinicians. Each week, we’re sharing key insights from healthcare professionals to raise awareness of tubing misconnections, highlight ongoing patient safety challenges, and support the adoption of safer systems and practices. Every misconnection represents an opportunity to improve systems, strengthen safeguards, and prevent future patient harm.

Stay tuned every Wednesday as we share additional survey findings.
