Every doula client I have had or will have will hear me say these words at/on or just after 40 weeks. The “estimated due date” is just that - an estimate, a guess, based on outdated science, not based on you, your body or your baby. Trust your body and your baby, because truly, “babies come when they do, not when they’re due.” PC of mom and baby .r.sander

When a failed shoulder surgery gets in the way of my birth doula commitments, I left it up to my clients of they wanted to secure another doula or keep me on for their first babe due June 15. After 20 weeks of building the doula/client relationship, and prenatal visits, they chose to keep me in whatever capacity I could be there. When mom had to her induced 8 days early, (11 days following my rotator cuff, labrum and bicep tendon repair), I showed up as best and as long as my arm could manage (11 hours). Grateful and blessed for as an amazing backup who invested time before labor ever began to meet my clients and who seamlessly stepped in to support them in the last 11 hours to meeting their sweet girl! Birth doulas need a village too! Welcome sweet baby girl!!

My first repeat client - and what a birth it was! As the midwife said, second births can be “denial” births. LOL

6:30 - something is feel similar to the labor with my first - I’ll keep you posted.

9:30 - I reached out to check-in. Contractions are definitely getting established - feeling them in the sacrum and hips like her first. Offered to go to their house to help with some movements to encourage baby off her sacrum and hopefully allow mom and dad to get some rest.

10:20 - after discussing with hubby - sure, you can come.

🏎️ - me leaving within 7 minutes for the 63 minute drive, driving like the NASCAR driver I believe I am and arriving at 11:34.

11:45 - “something’s down there” - mom’s body had birthed baby’s head while in the bathroom. Dad called the midwife and I caught the rest of this sweet girl’s body with mom’s next contraction.

Grateful all is well with this healthy baby girl and her mama. The midwife upon arrival termed it “denial birth” - it can’t be time… it was!

This mama! She amazes me! They all have and do, but this mama stayed calm, breathed this baby down and trusted her body.

When a client’s water breaks but contractions either haven’t started yet or are irregular and manageable, I encourage that mama to rest and cuddle with her spouse/partner. Allowing her body to rest and store up energy she’s going to need in active labor and pushing, as well as encouraging her to be in her loved one’s arms gets that natural oxytocin flowing to help naturally progress things along.

That is what this second time mama did! No time for vitals, fetal monitoring, labs, IV access, etc. She listened to her body at home and knew when it was time to head to the hospital. Eyes closed, she surrendered and blocked everything else out. This wonderful couple met their new baby with mom kneeling on the bed with dad supporting her. Together they welcomed this new life into their arms.
