Strength and balance work can help keep everyday invitations answerable for older adults, from a coffee downtown to a walk with family. In Woodstock GA, the free, flat Scarecrow Invasion walk along Main Street is a low-pressure way to add steps and practice balance before winter. Nearly 200 scarecrow displays are up through the end of October. Stop by the Woodstock Visitors Center at 8588 Main Street to vote.

The enrollment period runs through December 7, 2026. It was a chance to learn alongside neighbors and support informed conversations.

The 11th Annual Tee Off Fore Seniors Charity Golf Classic shows how quiet, logistics-heavy care makes ordinary days possible. Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 10:00 AM, volunteers will gather at Golf Club at Bridgemill in Holly Springs to benefit Volunteer Aging Council senior programs across Cherokee County. Behind every tournament may be a caregiver rearranging a day so someone else can participate, or so a local senior can be safe and supported.

Families facing dementia can ask the person’s doctor or health system whether it participates in CMS’s GUIDE Model and whether their loved one may be eligible. GUIDE may offer care coordination, caregiver education, support groups, a 24/7 support line, and respite. The Thriller 5K brought Team Amada to Milledgeville on Friday, October 16. Alisha and Joe walked the annual event in under an hour, and had plenty of fun along the way. Amada Senior Care Woodstock sponsored the 5K, hosted by Georgia College’s Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha, to support the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation and Breast Cancer Education, Awareness and Research.

Thank you to Ella Stover, Vice President of Philanthropy, and the entire chapter for organizing a meaningful community event. From Woodstock and elsewhere in Cherokee County to Milledgeville, community support matters, in senior care and in-home care alike.

Long-term care insurance usually does not begin paying because of a diagnosis or hospital stay. Most policies use a benefit trigger: needing substantial help with at least two of six activities of daily living, or experiencing qualifying cognitive impairment.

The six ADLs are bathing, dressing, eating, transferring or mobility, toileting, and continence. “Two of six” might mean needing help bathing and getting safely from a bed to a chair.

Families often discover this during a fall, hospitalization, or sudden care crisis. October is Long-Term Care Planning Month. A calm time for families in Woodstock and elsewhere in Cherokee County to read the policy while nothing is urgent.

Three calm questions adult children can ask this month.

1. What does Mom or Dad's long-term care insurance (LTCI) policy actually cover, and has anyone read it?
2. If memory changes appear, who will call the doctor or health system about CMS's GUIDE Model? Participation and eligibility vary, and Amada Senior Care Woodstock is not a GUIDE participant, confirm directly with the provider.
3. What would the first 90 days of care at home look like. The tasks, the costs, and who does them?

October is Long-Term Care Planning Month, a good reason to ask them while nothing is urgent. A free policy review and no-cost LTCI claims advocacy are a practical first step, and Amada does not sell insurance.

Families can also ask a qualified professional about funding options: existing LTCI, VA benefits for eligible veterans, a life insurance option or conversion, reverse mortgage or home equity through a lender, and Medicaid where eligibility rules apply.

On Saturday, October 17, BBQ, Brews & Boos returns to Friendship Plaza in downtown Cartersville from 12 to 8 PM, with barbecue, brews, live music, vendors and family fun. Admission is free.

A full festival day means walking, standing and sun. For older adults, supportive shoes, water, shade, seating and real breaks can make the outing comfortable. Nobody has to stay all eight hours.
