Healing often begins in ways that aren’t dramatic. You may notice any of these improvements, or it may show up differently for you. The key is that you’re not overlooking all the big and small ways you’re improving. ❤️

Did you know changing the way you view stress can reduce the negative side effects it may be having on your health?
According to the Mayo Clinic, common effects of stress on your body look like:
Headaches, muscle tension or pain, chest pain, fatigue, change in s*x drive, stomach upset and sleep problems.
To reverse the negative side effects of stress, you can try two simple things:
First- Try reminding yourself that your stress response is your body's attempt to protect you from potentially harmful situations. If that doesn't work, try practicing a "Growth Mindset". A growth mindset is all about changing the way we look at difficult situations and problems. Learning to say, "I haven't figured out how to balance my budget yet, but I need to be patient with myself" instead of, "I never have any money, I'm always broke!" isn't going to fix everything right away, but small consistent changes overtime will improve how you perceive stress and stressful situations.

We wish healing was as easy as flipping a switch, but symptoms don’t typically vanish overnight. Instead, it can be helpful to imagine a dimmer switch.

Each session, we dial down the intensity of the anger, or the frequency of the anxiety, or the duration of the sad spells. Slowly, we begin to notice that light isn’t so bright anymore.💡

We are incredibly sad to share that today is Kaylen's last day at our office. Sometimes life has unexpected twists and turns, Kaylen's road is taking her South. We are so thankful to have been a small part of her journey and are incredibly proud of the work she has done with her clients while with our agency. The Illuminate team looks forward to seeing her continue to take the social work world by storm! Go get 'em girl!

When applied minutes or weeks after a traumatic event, Psychological First-Aid can potentially reduce the risk of developing chronic stress disorders such as PTSD and other mental health conditions.

Some examples of singular traumatic events are car accidents, natural disasters, violent assaults, unexpected loss, threats of violence, and school shootings. Secondary trauma (hearing about a traumatic event) can also be traumatizing. There are many other possible qualifying events in addition to the ones listed here.

Psychological First-Aid is NOT therapy. Think of it more like CPR for your mental health. If applied quickly after the event, it can reduce the impact of the event on the brain, body, and nervous system. The intervention usually takes 10-20 minutes and has been shown to reduce the level of disturbance someone feels in connection with a traumatic event.

While it does not replace therapy, it may take a 10/10 level of disturbance to a more tolerable level, which could improve daily functioning and reduce the risk of development of chronic conditions, such as PTSD.

Individuals who have received this intervention have reported a reduction in brain fog, reduction in physical tension in their body (think of the elephant standing on your chest turning into a cat instead, or disappearing completely), increased ability to connect socially, and return to normal day to day functioning.
