Autism Awareness vs. Autism Acceptance

What's the difference? 💙

They're not opposites. They work together, and neither matters more than the other.

Awareness is the starting point, simply recognizing that autism exists. It spreads information, educates and opens the door to conversations about disability inclusion.

Acceptance goes a step further. It's not just knowing autism exists; it's embracing it. Acceptance celebrates the strengths, gifts and unique abilities of individuals with autism. It's what drives real understanding and lasting change in our communities.

Awareness starts the conversation. Acceptance carries it forward. To be aware is to accept. 💙

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is an evidence-based intervention for children with autism. At Hearts and Hands, it's more than a standalone service. It's a bridge that connects our entire collaborative care team.

Here's how it works:

🗣️ Speech Therapy Our SLPs work hand-in-hand with each child's ABA team, using consistent techniques, strategies, and tools across sessions so communication skills carry over and generalize in every setting using the same methods.

🍽️ Occupational Therapy Our OTs guide strategies for daily living skills and sensory processing, like feeding themselves independently at lunchtime, manipulating fasteners, and tolerating sensory input in their environment. We make sure sensory breaks are built into their day and their team is trained in necessary techniques.

🚶 Physical Therapy Our PTs help ABA clients build the strength and confidence to navigate hallways and their environment safely.

Together, these services create a truly integrated approach because progress happens best when every therapist is working from the same playbook.
