Worcester State University School Psychology

Worcester State University School Psychology The Education Department at Worcester State University offers graduate students the opportunity to receive an Ed.S degree in school psychology.

The School Psychology graduate program offered at Worcester State University is a Specialist level program that awards students with an Education Specialist (Ed.S) degree upon completion of three year full-time study. Our program here at WSU is accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), which offers review and approval services for graduate programs to ensure student re

adiness to practice in the field upon graduation. An advantage of this review and approval process is that it ensures graduate programs, as part of their course of study, mandate completion of requirements that students will need in order to apply for national certification. During the course of the program, students need to complete a total of 72 credits, supervised full-time practicum (600+hours), and supervised full-time internship (total 1200+hours). In addition, students need to complete a professional portfolio and demonstrate competency on a comprehensive examination.

Meet the new WSU School Psychology Graduate Students! 😊

"Hi! I’m Jessica Palermo, first year graduate student in the School Psychology program at WSU. With an associate’s degree in Elementary Education, a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Developmental Psychology and a minor in Psychology from Lesley University, I’ve worked in special education and ABA for over ten years in public schools. I am passionate about advocating on behalf of our students and am eager to do so through the lens of a School Psychologist. Beyond the academics and real world experience this program provides, the community of fellow learners here at WSU is supportive, encouraging, and committed to growth, making this the perfect fit for both my personal and professional development. Here’s to the School Psychology Class of 2025- we got this!"

Worcester State affirms its support for LGBTQ+ students with flag raising

The university will break ground on a new public space, “Common Ground,” April 27 to celebrate and affirm its support and allyship with LGBTQ+ and other communities. A flag raising ceremony with both a Pride flag and a Hate Has No Home Here flag will take place at 11 a.m. outside the lower level of the Student Center. All members of the WSU community are encouraged to come out to show their support.

“For many years, Worcester State University has wanted to raise a Pride flag to signal that LGBTQ+ students, staff, and faculty are welcome at Worcester State University,” said Stacey Luster, general counsel and assistant to the president for employment and equal opportunity. Now the hard work of a planning committee that includes students, faculty, and staff is about to be realized.

Check out second and third year students, Jessica Moore & Michelle Smith, presenting their research at the 2022 NASP Convention this past February!

Here's a little bit more information from Jessica about their research
🤓

"School psychologists carry responsibility for providing support to students during crisis situations and for supporting students experiencing grief and trauma. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the weight of these responsibilities for school psychologists potentially resulting in increased caseloads. When higher caseloads interfere with a school psychologist’s ability to perform at their best it can be a contributing factor to burnout, a symptom of compassion fatigue. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on compassion fatigue for school psychologists. Factors including school reopening plans, self-care activities, and social supports were examined to determine their relationship to stress levels pre-pandemic and "post-pandemic". Findings indicated that stress levels among school psychologists in Massachusetts have increased significantly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. School reopening plans significantly impacted stress levels with fully remote conditions resulting in the greatest increase in stress levels. This information is relevant to the pandemic we still face today and the amount of responsibility on school psychologists to adapt to unprecedented conditions."
