Nine months ago, a man came into my office with almost no feeling left in his feet.
I want to be honest about what I told him at that first visit. I did not tell him I could give him his feet back. Our goal was simpler, and at his stage far more important: prevent the neuropathy from getting any worse.
Here is why that mattered. His testing showed 88% sensation loss on the top of his left foot. 90% on the right. 89% and 88% on the bottoms. That is the stage where neuropathy stops being about burning and tingling and starts being about balance, falls, wounds that won’t heal, and the complications nobody wants to talk about.
Simply holding the line would have been a win.
This week I retested him.
Top of left foot: 88% → 70%
Top of right foot: 90% → 78%
Bottom of left foot: 89% → 75%
Bottom of right foot: 88% → 75%
He walked in with roughly 11% of his sensation. He now has roughly 25%. That is more than double the feeling he had nine months ago — and we got there while the goal was only to keep him from sliding backward.
His symptoms have calmed down.
Here is what I want you to take from this. Neuropathy is progressive. It does not stall on its own and it does not reverse on its own. Every month you wait, there is less healthy nerve left to work with.
But less is not none. That is the entire point.
If you have numbness, burning, or tingling in your feet, the first thing to find out is how much nerve function you still have. That number determines everything that comes next.
