Having a body is to face thresholds or body symptoms that will both kill us and cure us. It is an invitation to a pilgrimage, a place of nourishment and suffering. It is an invitation to dwell deeply in our bodies, no matter how young or how well we are and feel. There is something very pragmatic about our bodies; they function like machines and carry us faithfully on our journeys. There is an ultimately sacred aspect as well, one that we are allowed only glimpses of, one that is hidden by a veil of practicalities and everyday responsibilities that require our full attention. It turns out that what we experience as symptoms, as disrupting failings of our bodies, are opportunities allowing us to meet the world in a different way—a first footing in an obscured landscape with untold stories. It takes courage and fierceness, someone half a shade braver than our usual self, to break through the incomplete physicality of our bodies and meet the hidden treasures deep within. We must risk and hazard ourselves into unknown territories and find the sacred place of nourishment and healing.

"There is an arrogance in seeking explanations and wanting to
know. Unlearning our attachment to the concept of health, relinquishing our heroic pursuit of achievements, and learning to live with our incapacities and a body that will 'fail' us is challenging
and often only achievable for short periods. However, there is a
palpable presence in our bodies and in their failings; beyond the
pain, they o‘er a gift. They are part of our ongoing journey and
help us develop awareness of what we tend to marginalize. They
assist us in balancing the notion of efficiency while embracing our
incapacities."

My Week

This week
I live my life
my voice buried under the rubble
by images of bombed children,
maimed, and starved to death.

I live my life
my soul’s hopes hammered
by the sky’s torrents of cries
as winds tear the earth apart.

I live my life
my heart numbed
as Facebook’s algorithms
send me reels of consoling music.

All the while
contenders for president
roam the battlegrounds,
their speech increasingly
void of meaning,
as the polls show
thin margins of blue and red
the consequence unimaginable.

I live my life
my heart, soul and voice silenced
as the lonely comet
and the night’s northern lights
remind me, that
the horizon is
the limitless sky’s
only boundary.

Here is a poem I want to share

Far Horizon

As I look into the distance
the sky melts with the ocean
one becoming the other.
The hazy gray color mending
what was apart together.

As I dream into the past and future
my friend’s passing becomes blurry.

As I close my eyes
his last sighting comes to mind,
climbing up Horizon Hill,
leaning heavily on his ski pol,
waving left and forth,
weaving the dreaming
of a horizon coming close,
as if he knew
that presence, past and future
would soon become one.

The uphill road
that was always beckoning
now a distant memory.
His trail slowly fading.

The lighthouse beam
that shone so brightly
vanishes from our sights
regardless of our longing.

How can we carry his light forward
when we can barely see
glimmers of his presence
and only feel crumbs
of his love?

This is a poem I wrote as I mulled over our current politics and saw the two eagles on the beach.

Two Eagles

Bald, jointly sitting
on their high perch,
satiated and not in a hurry
to soar among the sky’s expanses.

Two eagles
in calm mutual presence,
a rare sight of unity,
their steadfast posture
showcases ongoing resolve.

Imagine them both
on the U.S. presidents’ coat of arms,
radiating glory and cooperation
among formidable peers.

A symbol for all of us
to amend our own Constitutions,
to include the outer and inner other,
to integrate our opponents’
perspectives and interests,
and to realize King’s
Beloved Community.
