I warn my patients to limit their processed foods. Many brands use questionable ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, excessive salt and added sugar. There’s also a wide range of preservatives used - some are deemed safe, while others should be avoided. Here are five preservatives that may have ties to cancer.

Processed foods can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they’re easy, convenient time-savers. But they are often made with questionable ingredients, from high-fructose corn syrup, excessive salt and added sugars.

Women have been using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for years to help ease menopause symptoms and lower their risk of menopause-linked conditions like osteoporosis, heart disease and dementia. However, I warn female patients with a personal or family history of heart disease or a hormone-dependent cancer to avoid HRT. As a result, some of these women try supplements, but that might not be the best alternative.

In 1942, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals introduced the first hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women going through menopause. Over the intervening decades, doctors have gone back and forth on the safety and efficacy of using HRT to treat symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal discomfort.

Many of my patients have heard me talk about the Mediterranean and DASH diets. But there’s another valuable diet that you can follow for brain health; it’s the MIND diet. Here’s how the MIND diet can help lower your risk of dementia.

While many of the medical elements of Alzheimer’s disease remain a mystery for researchers, it’s increasingly obvious that lifestyle choices heavily influence our risk for this debilitating disease.

Kidney disease is rising in the U.S. Currently, 37 million Americans have chronic kidney disease, but 90% are unaware of it, as its signs and symptoms are unnoticeable in earlier stages of the disease. This is why I educate my patients on how they can lower their risk. Here’s what you need to know.

There’s been an uptick in kidney cancer media attention since 46-year-old Brad Arnold, lead singer for the rock band 3 Doors Down, was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. Kidney cancer, along with other kidney diseases, is a major public health concern. While these conditions affect a small perc...

Summer 2023 was the hottest summer on record, according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (more commonly known as NASA). And summer 2024 is on track to beat it.

I preach to my patients the importance of eating a gut-friendly diet. Poor gut health can lead to digestive issues, a weak immune system, skin problems and sleep disturbances. Where should you begin? Start by incorporating probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics into your diet. Here’s what you need to know.

American interest in gut health began rising about 15 years ago. But research on gut microbiome dates back to the 1840s when European scientists studied the role of bacteria in the breakdown of food, the effects gut microorganisms have on health and the importance of probiotics.

Like most people, my patients are concerned about Alzheimer’s disease. When Alzheimer’s is diagnosed at an earlier stage, medications may be able to slow the progression; however, historically, Alzheimer’s diagnostic tests have been limited. There is good news. The FDA approved a blood test in 2025 that can help diagnose Alzheimer’s during earlier stages. If you think you may be experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms, reach out to me. Here’s what you need to know about this new test.

For many years, the only way to positively diagnose Alzheimer's disease was studying the brain after a patient had died. But medical advances like advanced scanning combined with memory tests and family history has made it easier for physicians to diagn...
