Anyone else hear about the PCOS name change?
Honestly, it’s heartbreaking that sometimes it takes a name change for women’s healthcare concerns to finally get the attention they deserve.
The hormonal disorder previously known as PCOS affects as many as 1 in 8 women, yet up to 70% remain undiagnosed. The hope behind the updated terminology is to improve awareness, recognition, and ultimately… BETTER CARE.
One of the biggest misconceptions? You do NOT need to have “cysts” on your ovaries to have PCOS.
Diagnosis is based on meeting 2 out of 3 criteria:
• Signs of androgen excess / elevated testosterone (acne, facial hair growth, hair thinning or hair loss, oily skin)
• Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
• Polycystic appearing ovaries on ultrasound
PCOS/PMOS is far more than just ovarian cysts. It is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect skin, hair, weight, ovulation, fertility, insulin resistance, and long-term health.
This is why it’s so important to look at the FULL picture, your symptoms, clinical findings, labs, and ultrasound criteria, not just a single lab value or ultrasound report.
If you’ve been told: “Your labs are fine.” “You just need to lose weight.” “Your periods being irregular is normal.”…please know your symptoms deserve to be heard and evaluated.
Women’s hormones are not “one size fits all,” and you deserve answers, support, and evidence-based care.
If you suspect you may have PCOS/PMOS or have felt dismissed by previous providers, we would love to help. Schedule an appointment with us today.
