The Grace Baptist Church near our office is a shelter to all who need it!
FLOODING UPDATE โ AUGUST 13 4:00p
Town staff gathered at the Town Garage this afternoon to coordinate first responders, equipment, and personnel for what we expect throughout the evening and overnight.
A clarification on the White River crest: The river is cresting at approximately 18.5 feet in Muncie around 2:00p and is not expected to crest in Anderson until approximately 2:00a. That means we expect water levels in Yorktown to continue rising this afternoon.
If water is encroaching within 1โ2 feet of your home, you are in an at-risk situation. If you can safely do so, move important belongings to higher ground and evacuate; stay somewhere else overnight. Additional rain is expected between approximately 10:00p and 8:00a, with the potential for 3 to 5 inches. At this time, EMA does not have an estimate for what impact that additional rainfall will have on already elevated flood levels and overwhelmed community infrastructures.
It is difficult to overstate how unexpectedly and rapidly water levels will change. Residents along River Road went to bed with minimal concern of a significant impact and awoke around 7:00a to dire situations; some barely able to leave their homes with medicine and pets, but without even having time to grab shoes.
The Townโs wastewater treatment plant was also hit hard overnight and is now underwater. Staff remained at the plant as long as they safely could, securing operations and protecting equipment before conditions forced them to evacuate. IDEM has been notified, there has been significant damage, and the situation continues to be monitored.
Town personnel will remain on duty throughout the night, with boots on the ground monitoring conditions and responding to emergencies and community needs.
Currently, nearly all routes across the White River are impassable due to flooding, effectively dividing our community in half. We are positioning personnel and necessary heavy equipment on both sides of the river so resources remain available wherever they are needed. We anticipate Nebo Road may also become impassable and the bridge may need to close as water continues to rise.
Town staff are notifying residents when they identify homes in potential danger so families have time to prepare and evacuate. Numerous homes backing up to the river are being evacuated. In some cases, residents have had some time to move possessions from lower levels before leaving. Families, friends, neighbors, volunteers, and Town staff are thankfully stepping in to help.
The impact on many families in our community is severe. People are dealing with shock while trying to preserve memories, protect what they can and leave homes without knowing what they will return to. For many families along River Road, that uncertainty is compounded by not having flood insurance.
Do not be fooled by today's sunny skies or by dry pavement where you happen to be. We are not out of this yet. Water is still rising, more rain is expected tonight, and additional flooding is possible. Stay vigilant. Prepare your evacuation strategy and supplies. Check on your neighbors. Help where you can safely help, and do not put yourself or first responders in danger. Call 911 in an emergency where a person is at risk.
Grace Baptist Church at River Road and Nebo Road is dealing with flooding of its own at Heritage Hall. Even as they face those challenges, they have opened their doors to serve as an emergency shelter for those who are stranded or need somewhere safe to go. This is not an official Red Cross shelter, but it is an extraordinary example of the hope and generosity we are seeing throughout our community.
Thank you to our Town staff, first responders, volunteers, churches, families, friends and neighbors who are showing up for one another.
This is Yorktown. This is your town.
