"I thought I knew what adult day programs were like...until one afternoon changed my life.
A few years ago, my grandmother lost most of her ability to walk. She was admitted to a nursing home where they worked on getting her strong enough to go back home. It was a nice nursing home outside of Pittsburgh, but my grandma couldn't stand being there for a moment. All she wanted to do was go home.
She eventually regained her ability to walk and was approved to return home. My uncle lives close to her, so he comes over to help take care of her. Aside from him, she spends a large part of her day alone.
Fast forward a few years, and I'm working for the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. I offered to go down to Adult Day Services at Heritage Manor to take photos of their Purim Carnival. When I arrived, I couldn't believe what I saw.
The entire place was decorated for the celebration. They had a room full of carnival games and prizes, including a human slot machine that I was obsessed with. In another room, people were watching short films, making crafts, and enjoying delicious hamantaschen.
When I saw the care and effort they poured into making the day special, I cried. It wasn't just because of the decorations or the activities. It was because I saw people who were genuinely known, celebrated, and cared for.
It was more than just a party—they made it truly special for everyone. Whether you were religious or not, they made sure everyone left ADS smiling.
Seeing the happiness on the clients' faces made my heart burst with joy. It's a smile I wish I could see on my grandma's face more often.

Watching the staff interact with their clients made it clear that this isn't just a place to spend the day—it's a community where people are celebrated and cared for."
