We often think of the word “cancer” as something negative. However, there is another word closely tied to cancer that carries a more hopeful and empowering meaning: “survivor.” June is recognized as National Cancer Survivor Month for a very important reason—to celebrate those who have journeyed through countless doctor visits, procedures, and even insurance battles. These are experiences that anyone facing a cancer diagnosis will immediately recognize.
The journey itself can be life-changing, teaching us the importance of prioritizing our health—our bodies and our minds. Survivors all too well understand the emotional roller coaster that often begins with a lump, concerning blood work, or a persistent pain that will not go away.
In an effort to support others currently facing cancer, the University of Florida has developed a FREE, web-based program called Taking Control of Your Cancer Diagnosis. This curriculum offers guidance on managing finances, communicating effectively with healthcare providers, reducing stress, and accessing other valuable resources for individuals and families navigating a cancer diagnosis.
This course was created in conjunction with UF Health Cancer Center and UF/IFAS Extension to provide an overview of topics that will help people living with cancer be better prepared to meet common challenges after their cancer diagnosis.
