Onvida Health has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) to expand behavioral health services for veterans in Southern and Western Arizona.

This funding will enhance both our Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), with a focus on supporting veterans experiencing conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and other service-related mental health challenges, especially among veterans and Native American veteran populations.

In addition to expanding patient care services, the grant will also support team member training and development. Behavioral health staff, including counselors, nurses and support teams, will receive:

• Trauma-informed care training
• Military cultural competency education
• Specialized training in Native American traditions and historical trauma

These new investments build on the strong foundation already in place to support veterans in the region. The new VA Outpatient Clinic and the involvement of Onvida Health medical residents, who will regularly round at the clinic, will further strengthen coordination of care for local veterans.

The Foundation of Onvida Health has proudly awarded $57,500 in scholarships to support the next generation of healthcare professionals.

This year, 28 remarkable individuals are taking the next step in their journey. From recent high school graduates to working healthcare professionals advancing their careers. Among them are 14 Onvida Health employees who continue to grow, learn and lead by example.

This investment reflects something we truly believe in: when we support our people, we strengthen the future of care in our community.

Handmade with love. Shared with kindness. 🧡

Avery Wuertemburg, the 14-year-old daughter of our very own Chase Wuertemburg, RN, Endoscopy Services, recently walked into our Cancer Resource Center with a very special gift: 28 handmade crocheted critters created to bring comfort and smiles to patients and their families.

After teaching herself how to crochet, Avery wanted to use her talent to brighten the days of those facing difficult times. Each piece was carefully made by hand and donated with kindness, compassion and a heartfelt desire to make a difference.

As her parents shared, “We were incredibly proud to see her put so much time, care and compassion into each piece she created.” And the best part? She’s not stopping here. Avery plans to continue making and donating crocheted critters as an ongoing way to support those receiving care in our Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.

Acts of generosity like Avery’s remind us that kindness can come from anyone, and even the smallest gestures can have a big impact.

Thank you, Avery, for sharing your creativity and caring spirit with our patients and community. You inspire all of us.

Moses is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner serving patients at Onvida Health Behavioral Health Center. He earned an Associate of Science in Nursing from Chandler Community College in Gilbert, AZ and completed a Master of Science in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner studies at Walden University in Minneapolis, MN.

We’re proud to share that Onvida Health has been recognized by Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma (STEDY - Yuma County CTED) with the 2026 Career and Technical Education Champion of the Year Award.

Dr. Kristina Diaz, President of the Onvida Health Medical Group, accepted the award on behalf of our organization and the many clinics, providers, medical assistants and staff who supported STEDY students through this program.

This partnership with STEDY was created to give students interested in healthcare careers hands-on learning experiences within our medical clinics while working around their school schedules. Through mentorship and real-world exposure, students had the opportunity to explore the healthcare field firsthand and gain valuable experience along the way.

“We had a lot of students that it reaffirmed their love and excitement for healthcare,” said Dr. Diaz. “Some have said they definitely found their true north and path in healthcare through this experience.”

We believe that building a healthier tomorrow starts with investing in today's students. By opening our doors, we're helping grow the healthcare workforce that will serve our Yuma community for years to come. Expanding cancer care close to home took another step forward as Onvida Health now offers advanced Y-90 liver treatment.

This minimally invasive therapy delivers targeted radiation directly to liver tumors, helping preserve healthy tissue while working to shrink or control cancer, especially for patients who may not be candidates for surgery.

Making this possible takes coordination across teams, from imaging and lab services to interventional radiology and oncology, each playing a role in advancing care.

With every new capability, we’re widening access and strengthening what care can look like for our community.
