Neck pain is a common condition that can make everyday activities more difficult. While discomfort is felt in the neck, its cause may not always be limited to the cervical spine and associated tissues because the neck does not exist in isolation. It has been theorized that because the neck and mid-back (thoracic spine) work together during nearly every upper-body movement, restricted motion in the thoracic spine may increase mechanical stress on the tissues of the neck, elevating the risk of pain or injury.

Having a healthy and strong back is essential to maintaining a strong body. When your back is healthy, you don’t have back pain or recurring spinal issues, and you will feel happier and more confident.

However, despite the importance of taking care of your back, back pain is the leading cause for adults to miss work in the United States. Most people suffer from back pain at least once during their lifetime, with common tasks, activities, and lifestyle being the largest contributing factors to an unhealthy spine.

Sciatica is a term many people use incorrectly or don’t understand. A feeling of discomfort down the leg may cause you to think this condition is the problem. But what is it exactly and how can you treat it?

The technical name for Sciatica is lumbar radiculopathy. This name is in reference to pain radiating from the sciatic nerve. This nerve branches out from the lower back and has a wide range of sensitivity, including in the hips, buttocks, and the length of each leg. The pain from comes from irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression of the nerve — often caused by a herniated disc.

Chronic low back pain is defined as back pain that lasts for three months or longer. It affects millions of adults and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. It’s estimated that more than 600 million individuals worldwide are living with chronic low back pain at any given moment. While injuries, age-related changes, and certain medical conditions can contribute to persistent back pain, research suggests that several modifiable lifestyle habits may also influence the likelihood that back pain develops or becomes chronic...

Orthopaedics literally means “straight children.” The specialty of orthopedics began in 1741 when French physician, Nicolas Andry de Bois-Regard (1658–1742) published the foundational book Orthopédie (translated as The Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children) (1, 2). Dr. Andry established that children who were “bent” (not straight) had difficult lives, and that their situation could be improved while still growing.

In this “Crooked Tree,” Dr. Andry used the analogy of a growing tree being tied to a stake to straighten it out. Today, this image is known as the “Tree of Andry” and is the global symbol of orthopaedics.

One hundred and twenty years after the publication of Andry’s book (in 1862), two German orthopedic surgeons, working independently, came up with an explanation for why keeping growing children straight is critically important.

The first thing to understand if you are experiencing musculoskeletal pain after giving birth is that you are not alone. “Pain after childbirth is unfortunately a very common experience for many women,” explains Sarah Radabaugh, DC, DABCP, vice president of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) Council on Women’s Health, who practices in Worland and Thermopolis, Wyo.

A systematic review that examined 16 studies related to musculoskeletal pain during and after pregnancy reports that 2% to 75% of women may experience pain up to three years postpartum. “The most common musculoskeletal issues that women experience after childbirth are pelvic and low back pain, and upper back and neck pain,” says Dr. Radabaugh...

As the warmer months kick into gear, people all over the country are heading out to the golf course for a round with friends as a summer activity. While the game of golf looks relaxing, the sport places stress on the body, opening the potential for low back pain and other injuries.

Golf is attracting many younger players, but injury prevention remains important for young and old alike. Golfers often contort their bodies into challenging postures while maintaining a bent over stance for 18 holes. Over the course of a round, this movement, coupled with miles of walking, creates a workout. However, it also increases that chance for lower back pain and other injuries...

Neck pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, and after low back pain, it’s the second most common reason people seek chiropractic care. In the past two decades, a new contributor to neck pain has emerged: text neck syndrome, a condition linked to prolonged use of smartphones and other digital devices.

Text neck syndrome results from spending excessive time looking down at a screen. In more clinical terms, it’s caused by sustained neck and head flexion, which places strain on the muscles and soft tissues at the back of the neck...

“Gut health has a tremendous impact on musculoskeletal health,” explains Julie Johnson, DC, CFMP, an American Chiropractic Association (ACA) member. This is because the gut provides nourishment for our bodily functions and health. When it doesn’t function well, it opens the door to weakness and disease. “Over the long term, that reduces independence,” contributing to a lower quality of life, says Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson has seen the impacts firsthand in both her mission work, where she worked with patients with tight and lean muscles due to low levels of nourishment, as well as in her current practice. “I experience the connection between gut and musculoskeletal health with every patient,” Dr. Johnson says, where the quality of their bones and muscle tissue directly affects their ability to perform activities of daily living (which include bathing and eating) independently.
