Many parents are surprised to learn that a child can have 20/20 eyesight and still struggle with the visual skills needed for learning.

A Learning-Related Vision Problem is not about how clearly a child can see the board or identify letters on an eye chart, it’s about how efficiently the eyes and brain work together during tasks like reading, writing, focusing, and paying attention.

When these visual skills are not functioning properly, school and near work can become exhausting, frustrating, and overwhelming.

Some common signs may include:
• Losing place while reading
• Skipping or re-reading lines
• Poor reading comprehension
• Slow reading fluency
• Headaches or eye strain
• Short attention span during near work
• Avoiding reading or homework
• Reversing letters or words
• Complaints that words move or blur
• Difficulty copying from the board
• Fatigue after school

These challenges are often connected to difficulties with:
Eye teaming
Eye tracking
Focusing
Visual processing
Coordination between the eyes and brain

This is where vision therapy can help!

Vision therapy is a customized, non-surgical treatment program designed to strengthen the visual system and improve how the eyes and brain work together. Through guided activities, patients develop the foundational visual skills needed for more comfortable and efficient learning.

At our office, therapy is individualized and completed one-on-one with a trained vision therapist under the supervision of our Neuro Developmental Optometrist.

If your child is struggling in school and you feel like something is being missed, a Neuro Developmental Vision Evaluation may be the next step! Find answers and give your child a head start for next school year! Call our office at 616-848-7548 to learn more!

Last week, our staff had the opportunity to give back to the our community through Community Impact Day. We went out to the Outdoor Discovery center in Hamilton to help clear out weeds from their property. We were able to fill 9 trash bags! Thank you to the those who organized Community Impact Day, we love living in West Michigan and love to help give back to this great community!

Summer can be the perfect time to start addressing visual challenges before the next school year begins!

Without the added stress of homework, testing, and busy school schedules, many children can focus more energy on building the visual skills needed for learning, reading, and attention.

If your child struggles with reading, focusing, eye strain, headaches, or avoiding near work, it may be worth looking deeper into how their eyes and brain are working together.

Starting with a Neurodevelopmental Vision Evaluation now allows families time to understand their child’s needs and potentially begin vision therapy over the summer — helping children feel more confident and prepared heading into the next school year.

NeuroLab is a movement-based, small group program designed to strengthen the foundational visual and brain-body skills that support learning, focus, coordination, and attention—all in a fun and engaging environment!

Each session includes activities that target skills such as:
-Eye tracking
-Visual memory
-Coordination
-Spatial awareness

-Pattern recognition

-Attention & focus

Because we keep the groups intentionally small to create a supportive, personalized experience, space is limited!

💬 What parents are saying about NeuroLab:

“I had two sons participate in NeuroLab. They loved it because it was fun and engaging; I loved it because I could see the mind body connections, so important for healthy develpment taking place. My only regret is that it is only once a week; however we would not have been able to come more often due to distance. I am going to try to implement Dr. Neil’s exercises in my home because ideally, it should be part of daily education.”

“My son loved NeuroLab! He looked forward to going every week!”

If your child struggles with reading and learning, you may have heard the word Dyslexia. What does Dyslexia really mean?

Dyslexia affects how the brain processes language, especially reading, spelling, and decoding words. Many kids with Dyslexia are incredibly bright; however, reading can still feel slow, frustrating, and overwhelming.

What many parents don’t realize is that some of the same signs seen in Dyslexia can also be related to how the eyes and brain work together. These are called Learning-Related Vision Problems, and they can exist independently or alongside Dyslexia.

Signs to watch for:
Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
Rubbing eyes, blinking a lot
Blurry vision, Double, words run together
Skipping or re-reading lines
Losing place while reading
Reversing letters (b/d, p/q)
Slow, effortful reading
Avoiding books or homework
Reading worsens with a busy page of text

When visual skills like tracking, focusing, and eye teaming aren’t working efficiently, reading becomes even harder. That’s where vision therapy can help!

Vision therapy works to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain, improving the visual skills needed for reading, attention, and learning. It doesn’t “treat Dyslexia,” but it can remove visual barriers to overcome dyslexia easier.

If you’ve been noticing these signs, it may be worth taking a closer look. A comprehensive Neurodevelopmental Vision Evaluation can help determine if a vision problem (even if 20/20) contributes to your child’s struggles.

Lincoln (our office dog) created a few simple ways to support your child’s reading journey, scroll to learn more!

Reading is a foundational skill for learning, confidence, and independence. When a child avoids reading, it’s often not about motivation… it’s because reading feels hard.

If reading continues to feel like a struggle—slow, tiring, or frustrating—it may not just be a habit issue. It could be a Learning - Related Vision Problem. Many children with 20/20 eyesight still have difficulty with the visual skills needed for reading, like tracking, focusing, and eye coordination.

The next step is a comprehensive Neurodevelopmental Vision Evaluation to understand how your child’s eyes and brain are working together.

If you have concerns, call our office at 616-848-7548 to learn more. We’re here to help make reading feel easier and more enjoyable for your child!

Just because a child has 20/20 vision doesn’t mean reading/learning will come easily!

20/20 vision only indicates how clearly your child can see letters at a distance. It does not measure how well their eyes work together during real-life tasks like reading, writing, tracking and focusing in the classroom.

When functional visual skills are underdeveloped, reading can feel slow, tiring, and frustrating. Kids may lose their place, skip lines, avoid reading altogether, or complain of headaches.

In our office, the majority of our patients have 20/20 vision but still struggle because the functional visual skills needed for learning aren’t working efficiently. We teach our patients how to use their eyes and brain to work together as a team!

If your child is struggling, the issue may not be distance (20/20) vision, but instead a near vision problem where reading happens. Near vision takes intense and precise eye muscle coordination. Through comprehensive evaluations and individualized care, vision therapy is designed to strengthen these foundational skills so reading can become more efficient, more comfortable, and more confident.

If you’ve been told your child has 20/20 vision but is still having difficulty, there may be more to the story, and we’re here to help! Call our office to learn how a functional vision exam could be the next right step!
