On August 19, City of Hope Chicago will bring together physicians, community leaders and advocates for National Advocacy Day. The conversation will focus on prostate cancer disparities, the importance of PSA screening and the partnerships needed to improve access to education and care.

For Dr. Walter Stadler, treating genitourinary (GU) cancer means looking beyond the diagnosis to understand the person, the disease and the best path forward.

Colonoscopies are not just for older adults.

Brandon was only 41 when a few unexpected health changes prompted him to see his physician. A colonoscopy brought a diagnosis Brandon did not expect: stage 4 colorectal cancer that had already spread to his liver.

After surgery and chemotherapy at City of Hope, Brandon is now in remission and using his experience to encourage others to pay attention to their bodies and prioritize screening.

His story is a powerful reminder that colorectal cancer is no longer just a disease of older adults. Cases are rising in younger people, making it more important than ever to know the symptoms, trust your instincts and seek expert care when something doesn't feel right.

A lingering cough. An unexpected stage IV lung cancer diagnosis. A personalized path forward.

Heather thought she had a cold that wouldn’t go away. As a busy mom of two, she continued working, caring for her family and cheering at her sons’ baseball games. But when her symptoms persisted and worsened, she learned the cause wasn’t pneumonia—it was stage IV lung cancer.

Heather’s network connected her with City of Hope, where her case was reviewed and genetic testing identified a mutation. With that information, her care team created a personalized treatment plan that included targeted therapy.

Her oncologist told her, “We’re going to be aggressive, and we’re going to be swift. Are you with me?”

Heather said yes.

Today, she continues lung cancer treatment while staying active in the life she loves—working, spending time with her family and showing up for the moments that matter.

For World Lung Cancer Day on August 1, Heather is sharing her story to raise awareness that lung cancer can affect younger adults and people without typical risk factors. Her experience also highlights the role genetic testing and personalized medicine can play in identifying treatment options.

As a U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer, Dan T. had faced difficult missions before. But nothing prepared him for a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver.

Dan and his wife, Jessica — both military veterans — knew they wanted the most advanced care possible. Following a highly complex surgery to remove cancer from both his colon and liver, Dan is now thriving.

Today, his greatest role isn't in uniform. It's being a dad to his daughter, Evelyn Hope, and celebrating the moments that matter most.
