What a special evening at City of Hope’s Celebrate Life—reconnecting with cancer survivors, celebrating how far they’ve come, and seeing the incredible outpouring of love and support from family, friends, caregivers, and our entire City of Hope community.

I also had the opportunity to sit down on camera and talk about what Celebrate Life means to me as a cancer surgeon.

The goal was never just to treat the cancer. The goal is to help people get back to living their lives.

And such a fun bonus to have actor and cancer advocate Colin Egglesfield join us for the celebration!

Here’s to life beyond cancer. 💕

🥰 Even breast surgeons get mammograms. 💗

I spend my days reminding women to get screened—so yes, I practice what I preach.

Mammograms aren’t exactly how anyone wants to spend their day, but they matter. If you’re due, consider this your reminder to schedule yours.

Screening starts at age 40 for most women at average risk. You can do this! Mammograms literally save lives! 🤩

✨ The best moment of the night wasn’t on the baseball field—it was at home plate.

One of my patients thought none of her doctors could make it to Strike Out Cancer Night.

She didn’t know I was waiting for her.

As she crossed home plate, I hugged her and told her:

“I’ll always be here for you. Every milestone. Anywhere.”

Being a surgeon is about so much more than the operation. It’s about walking beside people through every chapter of their journey.

Some moments stay with you forever. ❤️

Sometimes the most important part of being a doctor has nothing to do with medicine.

This week, I had the privilege of surprising one of my patients at ‘Strike Out Cancer Night’ at the Kenosha Kingfish stadium.

She threw out the first pitch and ran the bases, believing none of her doctors could make it.

She had no idea I was waiting for her at home plate.

When she reached me, I gave her a hug and said:
❤️ “I’ll always be here for you. Every milestone. Anywhere.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium.

Moments like these remind me that caring for patients extends far beyond the clinic or the operating room.

I brought my boys with me. Because it was a lesson in showing up—not just during the hardest days, but during the joyful ones too.

A night I’ll never forget. 💙

“I can’t be out of the saddle.” 🐎
That’s what my patient, Hayley Kolar, said when breast cancer threatened to take her out of the ring.

At 43, she made a bold, deeply personal decision — to go flat after mastectomy.
No reconstruction. No apologies. Just freedom, strength, and control.

As her surgeon at City of Hope Chicago, I watched her define healing on her own terms.
💗 Going flat isn’t a fallback — it’s a completely acceptable option.

Every woman deserves full, unbiased information about all her choices — whether that means reconstruction, partial reconstruction, or none at all.

Hayley’s story reminds us that life after cancer isn’t about what you’ve lost — it’s about how fiercely you keep living.
