When some services feel uncomfortable to do alone

In Hanoi, many services are simple once you’re familiar with them.
But the first time — they can feel uncomfortable.

Not because you can’t do them.
But because small details matter.

Language.
Unclear procedures.
Different explanations from different people.

Common situations where expats often want someone with them:
• Visa agencies or immigration-related services
• Clinics or hospitals
• Hair salons & nail shops
• Phone stores (SIM, plans, troubleshooting)
• Apartment viewings or paperwork discussions

Why seeing an apartment in Hanoi matters (more than photos)

Many apartments in Hanoi look great in photos.
Bright rooms, wide angles, nice balconies.

But photos don’t always tell the full story.

When you’re not in Hanoi yet, you usually rely on:
• Photos sent by the landlord or agent
• Short videos taken from “good angles”
• Descriptions that focus on the highlights

That’s understandable — but also a bit one-sided.

What you don’t see in photos:
• The real size of the room (wide-angle cameras can be misleading)
• Building condition, hallway smell, elevator situation
• Small issues that may matter to you (humidity, storage, privacy, etc.)

That’s why I offer in-person apartment viewing support.

I go to the apartment myself and:
• Take real photos & videos — not edited, not staged
• Check the surroundings and building condition
• Ask the landlord or agent direct questions
• Share both good and bad points, based on your priorities
• Send you a clear summary so you can decide calmly

I can just Google it” — and why that doesn’t always work in Hanoi

Many expats tell me:
“I’ve Googled everything already.”

And that’s a great start.
But in Hanoi, online information doesn’t always match real daily life.

Here are a few common gaps:

• Prices online may be outdated or vary a lot by location and timing
• Reviews don’t show how a place feels at different times of day
• “Central” on Google Maps doesn’t always mean convenient
• Some services work very differently for locals vs. foreigners

Another thing Google can’t always show is what’s happening right now.
Some details are only clear when you ask directly — by calling the place, checking availability, or confirming how things actually work.

Google gives you information.
What’s often missing is local context — how things work day to day, in real situations.

That’s usually where confusion and frustration come from, especially in the first weeks.

Sometimes, having a local explain or check things directly can make decisions much clearer.

Why apartment photos in Hanoi can be misleading

Apartment photos often look perfect.
But photos don’t show many things that matter in daily life.

For example:
• Street noise that only starts in the evening
• Building smell, lighting, or maintenance
• How busy the area actually feels
• The real walking distance to cafés, supermarkets, or work

I’ve seen apartments that look amazing online,
but once you stand inside, you immediately feel something is off.

This is why some expats prefer having a local check an apartment in person — or at least explain what to watch out for — before making a decision.

It can save a lot of time, money, and unnecessary stress.

If a friend of mine moved to Hanoi tomorrow,
I wouldn’t overwhelm them with long guides or too much information.

I’d help them focus on just a few things first:

• Choosing the right area for their daily routine
• Understanding which prices are reasonable — and which aren’t
• Avoiding places that look great online but feel uncomfortable in real life

Hanoi isn’t hard to live in, but the first weeks can feel confusing.
Small decisions — where you live, how far things really are, what’s “normal” — can make a big difference.

Once those basics are clear, everything else becomes much easier.

Hanoi isn’t difficult — it’s just unfamiliar at first.

Those sources are helpful, but they often miss small local details that affect daily life.

For example:
• A “quiet” street that gets noisy at night
• A “central” location that’s inconvenient in reality
• Prices that look normal online but vary a lot by area

As a local, I’ve learned that these small details matter more than people expect — and they’re not always easy to spot from reviews or photos.
