The bacteriophage community has lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Dr. Elizabeth "Betty" Kutter.
For decades, Betty was a driving force in advancing phage biology and its applications – and phage therapy in particular - while also serving as a mentor, collaborator, and friend to countless phage scientists around the world. Her enthusiasm for phage research was contagious, and her generosity with her time and knowledge helped shape the careers of many in the field. As many of you know, Betty was the driving force behind the Evergreen International Phage Meetings, widely regarded as the most influential and enduring phage meetings in the world. For many of us, the science presented there was matched only by the friendships and collaborations fostered during the informal “salmon cake” dinners that Betty hosted, bringing together students, established investigators, and newcomers in the welcoming, inclusive spirit that defined her.
Among her many contributions to the field, Betty co-edited Bacteriophages: Biology and Applications with Alexander "Sandro" Sulakvelidze. Published more than two decades ago, the book became one of the first comprehensive references on modern phage biology and applications and helped introduce many researchers to the field at a time when interest in bacteriophages was just beginning to re-emerge.
Her scientific legacy will continue to shape the field for years to come, but she will be remembered just as much for her kindness, generosity, and the remarkable sense of community she created. Betty - you will be deeply missed!
