NTD Screening, Deworming, Scabies and WASH Awareness at Lakatoro School

Lakatoro, Malampa โ€“ 14 August 2026

A health awareness and screening activity was conducted this morning at Lakatoro School as part of efforts to prevent and control Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), including worm infection with scabies, and to promote good hygiene practices among school children.

The activity reached approximately 110 students from Kindergarten to Class 6, together with four teachers. Health workers provided NTD screening and deworming activities, with particular attention to identifying and managing worm and scabies among the children.

As part of the activity, a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) awareness session was also conducted. Students were taught the importance of regular handwashing with soap and clean water, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and after playing or coming into contact with potentially contaminated surfaces.

The activity aimed to increase children's knowledge and understanding of how good personal hygiene, proper sanitation and healthy behaviours can help prevent diseases and keep their families and communities healthy.

The health team acknowledged the support and cooperation of the Lakatoro School administration, teachers and students in making the activity successful.

The honourable councillors and Area administrator who are present to witness this important development also pledged their continuous support towards this primary health care initiative. Hon. MP, Shadrack has his representative present at today's event to deliver his address also.

Speeches highlighted the need for continuous community support for sustainability, Decentralisation of health services and aligning with SDG goal # 3 access to health for all by 2030.

Today, 11th of June 2026 the Health Week activity for Malampa came to conclude at Uri Aid Post Community on Central Malekula.

This year, the Health Promotion Unit in Malampa nominated three Aid Post Communities to co-host the event. These communities are Travol Aid Post Community on north west Malekula, Orap Aid Post Community on north east Malekula and Uri Aid Post Community in Central Malekula.
The theme for this year "Together for health. Stand with Science" has been echoed all throughout the activity with a strong emphasis in ensuring health services are accessible, fight against NCD, Cessation of Harmful substances to maintain a strong body defense against diseases, encouraging physical exercise, reduce consumption of processed foods and encouraging organic diets..

Health Promotion Malampa wishes to acknowledge the three officers who have commited themselves to ensure successful implementation of this business plan activity. Also acknowledging the responsible vhws, nurses incharge ( Atchin HC) for mobilising orap community & Nurse Aid of Uripiv Dispensary for attendance at Uri.
Extending word of thanks to the host communities of "Travol Aid Post" , Orap Aid Post and Uri Island Aid Post"
As part of the activity, The health team also did some assessments to identify needs of the respective communities.
For Travol Aid Post, it has been identified that the community is in need of sanitation improvement & some work to be done with their water supply.
For Orap community, the event has concluded with the community recommitting itself to Re-Open it's Aid Post.
For Uri Aid Post, the community has finally compromised in identifying a candidate to take up the role of village health worker.

Family Planning Refresher Training

A family planning chat session was conducted by Malampa RMNCH in Charge with the support of national office from 27 April to 07 May at the public Health conference room to raise awareness on reproductive health and responsible parenthood within the community. The session supports the Ministry of Healthโ€™s efforts in improving maternal and child health across Vanuatu.

The purpose of these training is to To educate participants on available family planning methods in Vanuatu
To promote healthy birth spacing for mothers and children
To address common myths and cultural beliefs about contraception

Nurses provided information on family planning methods available in local health facilities, including condoms, oral pills, injections, implants, and natural methods. Demonstrations were conducted, and participants were encouraged to ask questions in an open and respectful discussion setting. Information was also shared in simple language (including Bislama where appropriate) to ensure understanding.

The session was attended by 23 Rural community nurse. Participation were active, with many questions raised about side effects, cultural concerns, and access to services in rural areas.

The main objectives is to Improved knowledge of family planning options available in Vanuatu
Increased awareness of the importance of birth spacing
Greater willingness to visit health facilities for family planning services

Many challenges such has Cultural beliefs and misconceptions affecting acceptance of some methods
Limited access to services and supplies in outer islands
Shyness among youth in discussing reproductive health topics.

The facilitators from national RMNCH asked nurses to
Continue regular outreach programs in rural and remote communities
Strengthen supply chains for contraceptives across all islands
Increase involvement of community leaders and churches in awareness programs
Encourage youth-friendly services at health facilities

The family planning chat session was successful in increasing awareness and encouraging positive attitudes towards family planning. Ongoing education and support from healthcare workers remain essential to improve reproductive health outcomes in Vanuatu.

It is with deep sadness that Malampa ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฌ learned of the passing of our colleague, ๐‹๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐’๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ฏ๐š๐ง ๐‹๐š๐ฐ๐š๐œ, who served as a ๐๐ž๐๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐Œ๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐š ๐…๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐Ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ซ ๐ข๐ง Malampa & ๐’๐ก๐ž๐Ÿ๐š ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ž.
Sylvan was a hardworking and committed officer who worked tirelessly alongside his colleagues at Malampa Health then later joined Shefa Health and the Ministry of Health to support the ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ-๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ถ๐—ป Malampa and ๐—ฆ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฎ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ.
