Spotlight - Youth Volunteering during Emergencies

🌍 World Humanitarian Day Spotlight: Laurent Willie

Meet Laurent Willie, a passionate Youth Volunteer with the Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA), who is making a difference by serving his community when they need support most. Through his volunteer work, Laurent helps raise awareness on s*xual and reproductive health and supports health outreach activities that strengthen community wellbeing.

For Laurent, volunteering is more than giving his time. It is about standing alongside communities before, during, and after disasters. Whether assisting with health checks, supporting the distribution of medicines, or helping community members access basic health services during emergencies, he is committed to ensuring people receive the care they need.

His humanitarian journey has also been one of personal growth. Through VFHA, Laurent has gained valuable health knowledge, developed confidence, and built skills that allow him to better serve others. These experiences have strengthened his passion for helping people and contributing to healthier, more resilient communities across Vanuatu.

This World Humanitarian Day, we recognize Laurent's dedication and the vital role volunteers play in supporting communities through challenges and times of need.

"I am happy and proud to help people." That simple commitment is what continues to inspire Laurent to take action for humanity every day.

🌏 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐨

From 20–23 July 2026, the Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA) successfully conducted a 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 for staff and volunteers in Luganville, 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐦 𝐆𝐮𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐮𝐦𝐢 (𝐏𝐆𝐅𝐁𝐘) 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭.

Delivered in partnership with the𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐮 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 (𝐕𝐃𝐏𝐀), a leading national organization specializing in disability rights, advocacy, and inclusion, this 3-day training strengthened participants' knowledge, practical skills, and confidence required to provide inclusive, respectful, equitable and accessible s*xual and reproductive health services for people living with disabilities. This training has also strengthened participants' ability to integrate disability-inclusive practices into the day-to-day operations of the VFHA Luganville Clinic, ensuring that services remain accessible and responsive to the diverse needs of all clients.

Through interactive learning sessions, participants explored:

Last week, VFHA brought together clinicians and support staff for a five-day staff capacity-building workshop designed to strengthen knowledge, practical skills and quality of service delivery across VFHA clinics.

Staff were trained on:
💻 𝐄𝐂𝐌𝐈𝐒 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 – Moving from paper to electronic client records for better and more efficient service delivery.
🤰 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 – Improving quality care and encouraging early first antenatal visits.
🧪 𝐇𝐈𝐕 & 𝐒𝐓𝐈 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 – New national strategies and improved service approaches.
🩸 𝐇𝐈𝐕 & 𝐒𝐲𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 – Hands-on practice with rapid testing and result interpretation.
🛡️ 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬 & 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬’ 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 – Strengthening ethical and respectful care.
🧼 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 (𝐈𝐏𝐂) – Safe hygiene and infection control practices.

💬 Staff reflections highlighted the importance of IPC, quality care, early antenatal visits, and using ECMIS to improve services. One participant summed it up well: “𝙒𝙚 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚, 𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩.”

🌼Today, the Vanuatu Family Health Association (VFHA) says goodbye to one of our hardworking volunteers, Ruka San.

Ruka has been assigned by JICA to work with VFHA in 2024. It was her first time working in Vanuatu, in health settings. With her knowledge and skills, she has outstandingly contributed in the achievement of VFHA’s work plan, particularly in assisting with entering client data, conducting health talks and awareness in schools, condom distribution through cooperatives set up in rural areas, and setting up the digital health intervention.

On behalf of the VFHA, we sincerely thank you for your work well done and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours. We will see you again. Farewell Ruka San. 🌼🤩❤
