Have you ever missed people you’ve never met before? Genealogy always has me in my feels and deeply desiring a connection with those I don’t know. Yet. But through family history, time and space collapse and I suddenly get to “meet” those I haven’t before.

If you’re a genealogist, this should matter to you. We talk all the time about finding our ancestors, but who makes sure the records we need are still here for us to find?

Archivists. Librarians. Preservation workers. Records specialists. PEOPLE.

Right now, workers at Archives New Zealand are on strike, and I want our genealogy community to pay attention.

These are the people caring for the records that hold our families’ stories, our communities’ histories, and the things that are precious and unique to our people.

Records don’t preserve themselves. People do.

If you care about genealogy, please care about the people doing this work, too. 🤎

Do you know the difference between libraries and archives? Both are super important and amazing resources for genealogy work!

I found a record of my ancestor saying he would be loyal to the US after the Overthrow happened. This is my story of how I confronted this uncomfortable family history.

If you’ve come across uncomfortable things in your ancestry, here’s what you can do:
1. Call it what it is.
2. Acknowledge your feelings.
3. Let the questions flow. Ask.
4. Search for the truth.
5. Doing family history well means knowing HISTORY. So, learn the history and context of what your ancestors lived thru.
6. Understand. Don’t excuse, but search for understanding.
