RADIOACTIVE WASTE STORAGE IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE

Ever wondered what happens to radioactive waste after a nuclear medicine procedure?

Radioactive waste is not simply discarded. It is collected, segregated, labelled and stored in designated radioactive waste storage areas.

🔹 Segregation – Waste is separated according to radionuclide and type.
🔹 Proper labelling – Containers are clearly identified with radioactive material warnings and relevant details.
🔹 Shielded storage – Appropriate shielding helps reduce radiation exposure to staff and the surrounding environment.
🔹 Decay-in-storage – For suitable short-lived radionuclides, waste can be stored until its activity falls to an acceptable level before disposal, according to regulatory requirements.
🔹 Radiation monitoring – Radiation levels are checked before radioactive waste is released from controlled management.

The goal is simple:
Protect the patient, protect the staff, protect the public, and protect the environment.

Radiation safety is an essential part of every nuclear medicine department.
