This weekend Dr Jacobs was on the faculty for an engaging update on Atopic Dermatitis and Alopecia Areata for dermatologists. These are common skin conditions that carry a high burden of disease.

A morning really well spent joining the first Psoriasis Association South Africa support group meeting for Gauteng as an honorary medical member.

One of the things I mentioned was how studies show that Psoriasis causes as much disability as other major medical diseases. In fact in one study psoriasis performed worse in terms of physical functioning than conditions like diabetes, stroke or lung diseases , it was only surpassed by congestive cardiac failure. So we really don’t appreciate the effect it has on people. There are also many associated comorbidities and so this really is an important disease. As a dermatologist with a special interest in inflammatory diseases I feel honoured to serve psoriasis patients who face these daily struggles.

If you have psoriasis take note of this wonderful association Psoriasis Association South Africa . There is so much value in peer support,which can help facilitate a sense of acceptance, empowerment and feeling less alone in your experience.
