Does hand sanitizer impact the skin microbiome? A great question from a participant on our recent webinar: The Microbiome in Health and Disease.
It was in the mid 18th Century when the link between handwashing and the spread of disease was established. Hand hygiene to this day is an important practice for reducing the spread of microorganisms within healthcare settings, communities and homes.
Does it also impact the commensal (our resident) microbiota of the skin? It can.
Studies have found:
• Widespread use of disinfectants has had a detrimental effect to the homeostasis of the hand's microbiota.
• The alcohol content in hand sanitizer impacts the skins barrier function due to stripping of the skins moisture as it evaporates.
• Handwashing minimally impacts the health of the hand microbiota when compared with disinfectant use.
In the article below, Dr Smith suggests the following points for balancing good hand hygiene with hand and microbiome care:
• Don't over wash - adopt good hand hygiene.. when needed.
• Opt for soap free - when other options are appropriate and available, go for a soap free product. Soap free hand washes clean without stripping moisture from the skin.
• Moisturise - Regularly moisturise the hands, especially if using alcohol based sanitizers to support the barrier functioning of the skin.

You've probably heard of gut bacteria, but did you know there are just as many bugs thriving off the oil and sweat on your skin? This is why you need to protect them.
