Why have a World Mental Health Day?

First observed in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, the day raises awareness and encourages support for mental health. WHO supports the observance.

For eduSOIL, 10 October is an opportunity to offer something practical alongside that conversation: a free hour of mindfulness, gentle yoga and guided meditation with Juanita Rea.

While many organizations are providing for immediate, physical basic needs for people afraid to leave their homes and whose homes and businesses have been targeted, the long-term impact on mental and social wellbeing in Northern Ireland also requires urgent attention. 🤝

eduSOIL focuses on psychosocial support, providing the tools and creative spaces to process recent trauma and build resilience for the years ahead. We aren't just reacting; we are building a path forward. 🌱"Art for Change" is here for the long haul.

We recently launched the "Art For Change Online: In Response To Racial Violence and Social Upheaval in Belfast". This intervention offers daily support sessions for individuals to share their feelings and concerns about recent events in Belfast, and heal. Each session guides participants to navigate the exposure to racial violence through arts-based strategies and to connect with others.

You can support this mission by participating in our fundraiser. All proceeds help fund our ongoing support programs.

Over the last few days, many children and young people across Northern Ireland have witnessed deeply unsettling scenes: graphic images, fires, streets in chaos.

For young minds, that kind of exposure doesn’t just pass. It stays. In sleeplessness. In silence. In sudden tears or anger they can’t explain.

If you’re an eduSOIL alum, you already know how to hold space for hard things. But right now, you might need space held for you.
That’s why we’ve opened online support sessions – just for our alumni.

These are small, trauma-informed group sessions, delivered online, designed to help you and your peers:
- Name what you’re feeling without fear of being judged
- Regulate your nervous system after days of alarm
- Feel less alone in a moment that can feel very isolating

Book a session for yourself or a youth group you support or belong to.
