💻 How much computer use causes neck and shoulder pain?
Many people assume pain only comes from extreme computer use; however, research suggests it starts much earlier.
Our chiropractor, Dr Edward, breaks down findings from Russin et al. (2026) showing that even 3 hours of computer use per day can significantly increase the risk of developing neck and shoulder pain.
And when computer use reaches 42+ hours per week, the risk rises dramatically.
📊 Research shows that among office computer users:
• 55–69% report neck pain
• 15–52% report shoulder pain
Why does this happen?
Long periods at a desk often mean:
➡️ Forward head posture
➡️ Rounded shoulders
➡️ Reduced movement
➡️ Increased muscle tension in the neck and upper back
Over time, this can overload the joints and muscles in your neck and shoulders.
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference — including posture awareness, regular movement breaks, proper workstation setup, and appropriate care when symptoms begin.
If you spend hours at a computer each day and notice tightness, headaches, neck stiffness, or shoulder discomfort, it may be your body’s way of asking for help.
