PROTEIN IN YOUR URINE: A MARKER OF KIDNEY DISEASE

Protein, or to be exact, albumin (a major protein in our blood) if detected in our urine, is a reliable early indicator of kidney damage and chronic kidney disease, but also of related conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol.

Next time when you check your kidney health, ask for checking albuminuria (albumin in urine) in addition to creatinine.

DEPRESSION: YOU CAN REDUCE THE RISK BY SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Depression is common, though many depressed people do not recognize it or accept the fact that they are depressed. Try the following simple changes in your lifestyle to lower your risk of becoming depressed.

1. Regular physical exercise for at least 30 minutes most days of the week can boost the level of natural mood-lifting hormones in your body.

2. Balanced diet: adopt brain-boosting dietary patterns rich in whole foods, vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. No alcoholic beverages.

3. Good sleep hygiene. 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night help regulate your emotion.

4. Social Connection: Maintain ties with friends and family. Social interaction is a major buffer against depressive symptoms.

LIVER HEALTH ASSESSMENT

Liver diseases are sometimes silent, especially in the early stage. One common problem among our patients is the ‘incidental’ finding of fatty liver. To assess your liver health, doctors have to take a medical history from you and perform physical exam. Initial tests often involve:

1. blood test for liver function, hepatitis, clotting profile, tumor marker

2. imaging scans like ultrasound and fibroscan

Common risk factors of liver diseases include alcohol consumption, hepatitis B carriage, overweight and diabetes.

If you are worried about your liver health, talk to a medical professional.
