Recent events in the news and on social media have left many people feeling worried, angry, upset, or frightened.

If you’re finding yourself affected by what you’re seeing, please know that this is a very human response. Our brains are wired to pay attention to threat, conflict, and danger. Constant exposure to stories of hatred, violence, and division can leave us feeling unsafe, hopeless, or overwhelmed.

But it is important to remember that the most extreme voices are often the loudest voices.

Every day, there are countless examples of kindness, compassion, and people helping one another that never make the headlines.

As a psychologist, I believe we can have difficult conversations without hatred. We can hold different views without dehumanising one another. We can acknowledge fear, frustration, or uncertainty without directing harm towards others.

For anyone feeling distressed by what they are seeing, especially young people, I encourage you to look for the helpers. Look for the people building bridges rather than walls. Look for the communities standing together. Look for the acts of kindness that remind us of our shared humanity.

Protecting your mental wellbeing doesn’t mean ignoring what’s happening. It means staying informed while remaining connected to your values. It means choosing where to place your attention and energy, and refusing to let fear, hatred, or division define your view of humanity.

At the end of the day, every one of us wants to feel safe, valued, and accepted.

I stand in solidarity with the many people across the UK and beyond who continue to choose compassion, inclusion, respect, and understanding. The actions of a minority should not make us lose faith in the goodness that still exists all around us.

Hyper-independence is often seen as a strength.

And to be fair, it can help us achieve a lot.

But sometimes what looks like confidence on the outside is actually a protective strategy underneath.

Many people learn early on that they can’t rely on others consistently.

So they become incredibly self-sufficient.

The problem comes when that survival strategy continues long after it’s needed.

Because eventually we start carrying things that were never meant to be carried alone.

The goal isn’t dependence.

The goal isn’t needing constant support.

The goal is flexibility.

Knowing when you can handle things yourself.

And knowing when it’s okay not to.

💭 Which of these signs resonates most with you?

I wonder how many people walk around carrying the label “lazy” without ever stopping to question it.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard someone say, “I’m just lazy.”

But when we look a little closer, what’s usually underneath isn’t laziness at all.

It’s overwhelm.

It’s exhaustion.

It’s burnout.

It’s ADHD.

It’s perfectionism.

It’s carrying too much for too long.

The problem with calling ourselves lazy is that it shuts down curiosity.

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” try asking:

“What might be getting in the way?”

That question tends to lead somewhere much more helpful.

Have you ever called yourself lazy? 👇

For years, I genuinely believed I was lazy.

Not because I wasn’t doing enough.

But because there were things I struggled with that other people seemed to find easy.

Then one day, a friend challenged me.

She pointed out all the things I’d achieved and asked:

“Is that really your definition of lazy?”

That conversation changed the way I saw myself.

Now, when someone tells me they’re lazy, I’m usually more interested in what’s underneath that label.

Because more often than not, it’s overwhelm.
Exhaustion.
Burnout.
Running on adrenaline for too long.
Or simply needing rest.

I’m curious…

What word do you use against yourself that deserves a second look? 👇
