Mood changes are normal. But when highs and lows become intense, long-lasting, or begin affecting relationships, sleep, work, school, or daily functioning, it may be more than “just mood swings.”

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by episodes of depression and periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania). These episodes can last for days, weeks, or even longer depending on the individual and whether treatment is received.

Some signs may include:
• Periods of unusually high energy or decreased need for sleep
• Racing thoughts or rapid speech
• Impulsive behaviors or risky decisions
• Intense irritability or agitation
