Understanding Parkinsonism

Parkinsonism is a term used to describe a group of neurological conditions that affect movement. Common symptoms can include tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement, and difficulties with balance and walking. While Parkinson's disease is the most recognised form, Parkinsonism can refer to several conditions that share similar symptoms.

Living with Parkinsonism can present daily challenges, and every person's experience is unique. Beyond movement-related symptoms, some individuals may also experience changes in communication, sleep, mood, and daily functioning.

Through the NDIS, people living with Parkinsonism may be able to access supports that promote independence, community participation, and improved quality of life. These supports can include assistance with daily living, social and community engagement, transport, therapy supports, and assistive technology, depending on individual needs and goals.

At Arete Care, we are committed to providing person-centred support that empowers individuals to live as independently as possible and stay connected to their communities. We work alongside participants to support their goals, encourage meaningful participation, and promote dignity, choice, and inclusion.

💙 Awareness helps build understanding. Understanding helps build more inclusive communities.

Participant choice and control have always been at the heart of the NDIS. While the sector continues to evolve, the way we support participants every day remains just as important. Supporting choice isn't just about offering options.

It's about listening without assumptions, working together with participants and their support network, and creating an environment where people feel informed and empowered to make decisions that reflect their goals.

At Arete Care, we believe the best outcomes are achieved through collaboration. When participants, Support Coordinators, families, allied health professionals, and providers work together, we create supports that are meaningful, personalised, and sustainable.

We've shared a few reflections in this carousel on how providers can continue to keep participant choice at the centre of their practice.

How does your organisation help ensure participant choice remains part of everyday decision-making?

We'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

Understanding Bipolar Affective Disorder

Bipolar Affective Disorder is a mental health condition that causes significant changes in mood, energy levels, and the ability to carry out daily activities. A person may experience periods of elevated or unusually energetic moods, known as mania or hypomania, followed by periods of depression.

These mood changes are more than everyday ups and downs. They can affect relationships, work, study, and overall wellbeing. With the right support, treatment, and understanding, many people living with bipolar disorder lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

At Arete Care, we understand that everyone's journey is unique. Through our Supported Independent Living (SIL) services, we provide personalised daily support in a safe and welcoming home environment.

Our experienced support team works alongside participants to build independence, establish healthy routines, develop life skills, and promote emotional wellbeing while respecting each person's goals and choices.
Whether it's assistance with daily living, medication prompts, community participation, or creating a stable and supportive environment, we're here to help participants live with confidence and greater independence.

If you or someone you know could benefit from SIL support, our team is here to help you explore your options and guide you through the process.

Together, we can create a supportive environment where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Last week was all about building meaningful connections.

On behalf of Arete Care, Aarav attended a morning breakfast with Belinda Toohey and other professionals from across the disability and community sectors. It was a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships, exchange ideas, and connect with others who share a commitment to improving outcomes for people living with disability.

We also attended the EdenCare Community Expo, where we caught up with support coordinators, allied health professionals, and community organisations, while making new connections across the sector.

Thank you to everyone we met throughout the week. We appreciate every opportunity to collaborate and build partnerships that make a positive difference in the lives of the people we support.
