For Atavion, known to friends and family as Tay, it meant discovering a path forward through his lifelong passion for cooking..

Through education, employment support, stable housing, and continued encouragement, Tay began building confidence, developing new skills, and imagining a future shaped by possibility.

Tay’s journey is a powerful reminder of why Café Vida matters. More than a café, Café Vida will create opportunities for young adults with complex mental health needs and those transitioning into independence to gain paid work experience, receive mentorship, and build the skills and confidence needed to pursue their goals.

Back to School Starts with Support: As a new school year begins, students across the country are preparing for fresh opportunities, new classrooms, and new experiences. While many are excited to head back to school, others are carrying challenges that aren't always visible—including trauma, anxiety, emotional or developmental disabilities, and other mental health needs.

At Fred Finch Youth & Family Services, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. That's why we provide compassionate, trauma-informed mental health and educational services that help children and youth feel supported both inside and outside the classroom.

From school-based mental health services and educational support to our certified non-public schools in Oakland and San Diego, we're proud to partner with schools across California to help students build confidence, resilience, and hope for the future.

As we celebrate 135 years of serving children, youth, young adults, and families across California, we’re excited to begin this new chapter under David’s leadership. His passion for expanding access to behavioral health care and strengthening communities aligns deeply with our mission to help every young person thrive.

We’re also incredibly grateful to Laura McClarin for her thoughtful leadership as Interim CEO and for guiding Fred Finch through this important transition.

We're grateful to Kaiser Permanente for their generous grant support for our Enhanced Care Management (ECM) program, which provides comprehensive care coordination for children, youth, and families with complex needs. Through a Whole Person Care approach, ECM helps participants navigate healthcare, behavioral health services, housing, education, employment, and other essential resources that support long-term stability and wellness.

This funding will support the hiring of two new Lead Care Managers—one serving Alameda County and one serving Contra Costa County—specializing in Transition-Age Youth (TAY) to expand access to ECM services in both counties.

These new positions will provide culturally responsive, individualized care coordination that empowers more young adults to achieve stability, improve their well-being, and successfully navigate the transition to adulthood.

Sharing Expertise. Strengthening Care. Our Enhanced Care Management (ECM) program, which provides comprehensive care coordination for children, youth, and families with complex needs, recently presented at the Alameda CalAIM PATH Collaborative's quarterly in-person meeting. The event brought together CalAIM partners from Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties to strengthen collaboration and improve services for children, youth, and families.

Pictured are Denita Elliot, CARES ECM Supervisor; Samika Shah, CARES ECM Manager; and Dr. Cristobal Hernandez, CARES ECM Director, who represented Fred Finch by showcasing our Enhanced Care Management program, sharing best practices and lessons learned, and featuring excerpts from our ECM podcast highlighting the life-changing impact of person-centered, whole-person care. Their presentation was well received and recognized for its practical insights and commitment to improving outcomes for the communities we serve.

We are proud to collaborate with partners across Northern California to advance CalAIM, strengthen care coordination, and help ensure children, youth, and families receive the integrated, community-based services they deserve.
