What exactly is a cortisone shot and how does it help relieve pain?

According to HSS spine and sports medicine physiatrist Dena Barsoum, MD, cortisone injections work by reducing inflammation, which is often a major source of pain. These injections may be used for conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon inflammation, muscle strains, and certain sports injuries.

The key is making sure the treatment is appropriate for your specific condition. That's why a proper evaluation by a specialist is so important.

Learn when cortisone injections may help and why personalized treatment matters.

Can you get back to the sports you love after a hip or knee replacement? For many people, the answer is yes.

From walking, golf and cycling to more demanding activities, returning to sports depends on factors including your previous activity level, the type of joint replacement and recovery.

Matthew S. Austin, MD, and Friedrich Boettner, MD, hip and knee replacement surgeons at HSS, explain what to expect and why setting realistic goals, following your rehabilitation plan and working closely with your care team can help you return to an active lifestyle.

Most people can return to playing sports after knee or hip replacement, but having a plan before surgery is wise.

Shoulder pain isn't always caused by an injury.

According to Gabriella E. Ode, MD, FAAOS, FAOA, sports medicine and shoulder surgeon at HSS, shoulder pain generally falls into two categories: pain caused by an injury, such as a fall, or pain that develops over time due to wear and tear of the joint.

The good news? Treatment options range from physical therapy and other non-surgical approaches to surgery, depending on the cause of your symptoms and how they've responded to treatment.

At HSS, our team of physicians and surgeons works together to identify the source of shoulder pain and develop a treatment plan tailored to each patient.

Learn more about the causes of shoulder pain and the options available to help you get back to doing what you love.

Can waiting too long for a hip or knee replacement affect your recovery?

It's one of the most common questions patients ask.

According to David J. Mayman, MD, Chief of Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement at HSS, delaying treatment can sometimes make recovery more challenging. Loss of motion, worsening joint deformity, and progressive stiffness can all affect long-term outcomes after surgery.

For patients with hip arthritis, a stiff hip can even place added stress on the lower back, impacting overall mobility and quality of life.

Watch as Dr. Mayman explains why timing matters when considering hip or knee replacement surgery.

Every mile means a little more after you've had to fight your way back to it.

After running the Sydney Marathon with a femoral stress injury and torn labrum, Emma faced months of recovery and time away from the sport she loved.

Through HSS Performance and guidance from Kate Baird, MA, ACSM-CEP, CSCS, exercise physiologist, Emma underwent a running mechanics assessment that helped her better understand how her body moves, build a stronger foundation, and train more intelligently for the miles ahead.

Today, she's back on the road and preparing for the TCS New York City Marathon with a new perspective: success isn't just about training harder, it's about training smarter.

Joint pain from osteoarthritis can make everyday activities more difficult, but staying active remains one of the most important things you can do for your joint health.

Tony S. Shen, MD, hip and knee replacement surgeon at HSS, explains what osteoarthritis is, why it develops, and why there isn't a single activity that's been proven to cause it. Instead, factors such as genetics, prior injuries, weight, and age often play a role.

Learn how a team-based approach helps patients find the right treatment plan and stay active longer.

Planning for pregnancy with lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome, or another autoimmune rheumatic disease?

Many people mistakenly believe that a rheumatic disease means a safe and successful pregnancy isn't possible. The reality is that with the right care, planning, and disease management, pregnancy outcomes can often be significantly improved.

Caroline H. Siegel, MD, MS, rheumatologist at HSS, discusses how early conversations with your care team, disease control before pregnancy, and appropriate medications can help reduce risks for both mother and baby.

Learn why reproductive health planning is an important part of rheumatology care.
