Happy Friday Friends!
This week we want to share a panoramic x-ray that we took showcasing a carotid blockage. We routinely find them on quality x-rays, but a carotid blockage can be life threatening! When we see them on x-ray, we promptly refer the patient to their physician for an ultrasound and additional testing.
Quality x-rays are crucial! It's about more than just checking for decay. While tooth decay is important to find, a quality x-ray can tell much more than just that!
The radiation received from this particular x-ray is equivalent to approximately 3 days of background radiation. While it is important to be mindful of radiation, the amount of radiation you receive in dental x-rays is such a minimal amount. Routine dental x-rays are a crucial part of not just your oral health but your total health.

Happy Friday Friends!
We would like to highlight how efficient the treatment of your scary lumps and bumps should be. Here at Dr. Bonine's when the situation calls for it, we have drive-by pathology services. Below is the accurate timeline highlighting the perfect example of that very service.

Last Wednesday, the dentist called us requesting their patient be seen regarding a painful lesion on their tongue. This patient had not been to the dentist in years but now had a painful ulcer on their tongue that had been present for a month and had grown worse very rapidly.

We saw that patient during our lunch hour the next day wherein we did an examination, consultation and biopsy of the tongue. The results were then driven and hand delivered to the pathology lab at U of M. Dr. Bonine called and spoke with the head and neck team to let them know the specimen was coming and what his initial impression of the lesion was.

We had the preliminary results of the pathology report the next day on Friday. The patient returned to our office that day and we discussed the diagnosis and continued to grease the path for treatment.

Monday, the patient had talked on the phone with the head and neck team at the University of Michigan.

Tuesday, the patient returned to our office to have all of the hopeless teeth removed that would have otherwise interfered with any impending treatment with the oncology team.

Wednesday, the patient followed up with their dentist for a good cleaning and addressed any fillings that were needed prior to the impending cancer treatment.

Yesterday, the patient was seen by the head and neck cancer team at the University of Michigan where they discussed the definitive diagnosis and plan for treatment.

In one weeks time, our patient has had a portion of the ulcer removed and read by the pathology department, their remaining dentition was cleaned up and prepared for any chemo/radiation that will be needed, as well as, met with the cancer team that will be handling their case. In one week's time!

Here at Dr. Bonine's, we will do all we can to expedite your care and ensure any scary lumps and bumps are addressed and treated as promptly as feasibly possible. Oral cancer screenings are crucial! Your dentist and hygienist should be thoroughly examining your mouth for any abnormalities routinely. Time is essential. Always follow up on abnormalities, big and small.

What a treat this Friday has been!
I was honored to work alongside my good friend and former colleague Dr. Penn. We have been doing cases together on and off for the past 45 years. We routinely worked together, doing jaw surgeries and major cases. Today he came out of retirement and functioned as an overqualified dental assistant, what a reminder of the fun we used to have. It was wonderful to have him with us today!
Have a wonderful weekend, we hope you find something to delight in. Perhaps catch up with an old friend, revisit an old hobby or reflect on the moments in your life that have brought you joy.

Happy Friday, Friends!

With summer winding down and the new school year just around the corner, we want to take a minute to talk about the importance of addressing your impacted wisdom teeth.

Your impacted wisdom teeth may not be hurting you yet, but that doesn't mean they are not causing potentially catastrophic damage. The research tells us that 24% of patients have had their wisdom teeth damage the adjacent teeth, and, in some cases, even leading to the loss of those otherwise perfectly healthy adjacent teeth. The research also shows us that approximately 85% of all wisdom teeth will need to be removed.

We strongly recommend coming in for an evaluation prior to the busyness of school, sports and the balancing of schedules with after-school activities, etc.

Please give us a call today to schedule a convenient time to sit down and talk with Dr. Bonine. Dr. Bonine is extremely passionate about wisdom teeth, specifically high risk wisdom teeth! He has even lectured around the country on the subject, who better to talk to about your wisdom teeth?

Happy Friday, Friends!

Have you ever wondered, "Should I replace my missing tooth? Will it really make that big of a difference?"

It's a great and valid question. Linked below is an episode from my WHMI podcast with guest Dr. Brian Petersburg where he and I discuss that very topic.
If you still have more questions on the subject, you can call us to schedule a consultation and we can sit down with you and discuss your specific goals and determine a treatment plan that best suits you.

Have a great weekend, friends!
