Perfectionism Causes Anxiety, Burnout, Stress Symptoms!?

This year my anxiety & stress symptoms came back - I discovered the hidden cause was perfectionism and treated it. I made this video explaining it all because I believe it could help you overcome your own anxiety & stress challenges (whether or not perfectionism affects you too).

If you’re struggling with anxiety, stress symptoms, burnout and related issues; and especially if you’re also a perfectionist; this video is for you.

For years I viewed my perfectionism as a strength… But after a lot of work myself, I was amazed to learn my perfectionism had been underlying my anxiety, stress symptoms, burnout and other mental health issues… As well as procrastination and creative blockages, a lack of fulfilment, and an inability to be the real me.

We live in a society that often views perfectionism as a positive trait — not nearly enough people are talking about the dark side of perfectionism.

If you’re ready to explore any of this more deeply and break free of your old challenges, you can reach me at https://james-cormack.com/contact/.

Stay Driven AND Beat Anxiety & Stress!

I’ve always enjoyed being driven, ambitious, striving for and achieving my goals and pushing myself - so when I developed psychological and physical stress symptoms and a cardiologist told me I had anxiety, I was worried that I would have to ‘ease off’; that I might have to lose my drive, my ‘edge’.

I was open to a bit more calmness and relaxation at times, and in certain ways, but I still wanted to live an exciting life, pushing myself, overcoming challenges and enjoying the thrill of achieving great things. But I had no idea whether I could keep that lifestyle while also overcoming anxiety & stress.

Thankfully I had nothing to worry about. Years after overcoming anxiety and stress, I am more effective, capable, high-achieving and successful than ever before in my life - across more areas of life.

How did I reduce stress and anxiety but also continue, even increase my drive, performance and success?

In a nutshell: Like most people, it turned out I had hidden root causes of stress and anxiety - and by treating those root causes, I reduced my anxiety and stress while keeping a lifestyle of drive, ambition and achievement.

Root causes are invisible and internal, and they are unique to each of us. For example, we might be missing something in our lives (perhaps a lack of meaning or an unmet need); we might be missing some knowledge about ourselves or about what leads to a balanced happy life; we may have unhelpful behaviour patterns; or many many other possibilities which can create an underlying, largely unconscious stress or anxiety.

When we treat our root causes - whatever they are - we can de-stress and overcome anxiety without needing to change our driven ambitious lifestyle very much, if at all. The ‘what’ we do can generally stay the same, although the ‘why’ we do it might change in a way that serves us better.

That being said, some people do choose to change 'what' they do - for example I decided to change my career. But those are conscious, empowered decisions, made only if they serve us to become our best selves.

In myself and in others, I've seen that we can overcome anxiety and stress without giving up what we love. If you love to push yourself and aspire to great things, I'd love to help you keep doing that and create the best version of yourself and your life.

Do you want to overcome anxiety and stress while keeping your drive, your edge, your ambitious lifestyle? If so I can probably help. Send me a message and I'll be in touch.

Best wishes,
James

“Nothing inhibits feeling like thinking”, said the brilliant Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.

I and many other people who've had anxiety and stress-based problems tend to do a lot of thinking. Thinking is great - but it should be balanced with enough feeling in life, too.

If we spend too much time thinking - too much time 'in our head' - we inadvertently become disconnected with our own emotions. Not being connected with our emotions is a big root cause behind a myriad of anxiety and stress-related symptoms.

Too much 'thinking' also means less 'doing'. Not enough doing can be a source of tension too, by making us frustrated that we aren't productive enough; perhaps having many dreams and ambitions but seemingly never getting round to achieving them.

To overcome anxiety and become your best self, find a better balance between thinking and feeling. Become more physical; listen to your feelings more closely; do more and think less; notice what happens. This is something I continue to work on in myself - I continue to learn about this.

We don't need to find the 'perfect' balance between thinking and feeling, and we never will. That's fine. Just do your best to keep it 'about right', and like many things in life we can keep readjusting as we go.

If this gave you ideas or resonated with you; if you'd like to chat more or just make a quick comment; feel free to hit reply. And have a great day.

***You NEED This to Get The Life You Want***

Whether you want to overcome challenges like anxiety, stress, panic & related issues, or achieve anything else in life, ACCEPTANCE is the crucial first step before you can achieve positive change and growth. But acceptance is something many people misunderstand at first.

There’s a lot to say about acceptance but I’ll give you my best ‘101’ explanation.

Acceptance is the opposite of denial. To accept something does not mean we like, enjoy or condone it; it just means instead of denying it, we accept its existence and the reality of that.

If we have some work we know we need to finish, but we watch Netflix instead, we’re denying the need to do that work. If we know we have a problem in our lives, but we carry on as normal – not making any significant effort to fix it – we’re denying the problem and the need to fix it.

Acceptance is not the same as acknowledging or admitting. We can all momentarily acknowledge we’re procrastinating and must do our work, or admit we have a problem that needs fixing – but then move on quickly to something else, without really accepting those facts.

***How do we accept something?***
To accept something we need to experience it, stand in the presence of it, contemplate the reality of it, and absorb it into our consciousness. There is no app or device that can tell us whether we’ve ‘accepted something enough’ yet – instead, accepting things is a process we learn with practice, developing a ‘feeling’ or intuition that lets us know whether we’ve truly accepted something or not.

It can be uncomfortable to accept we must do that work, or accept we’re procrastinating by watching Netflix. As we do so, we might feel uncomfortable feelings like frustration, regret or anxiousness. But these are the realisations we need to accept, these are the feelings we need to accept, before we have a reason to do the difficult but necessary thing: Close Netflix and start working. As we begin to work, we tackle the source of our problems, ultimately resolving them.

Truly accepting we have a problem in our life isn’t easy. Even when I learned I had a stress and anxiety problem, and when I knew I needed help, it still took months before I actually took action. If I had truly accepted I had a stress and anxiety problem sooner; accepted I needed help sooner; I would have saved months of unnecessary discomfort.

I hope this gives you an insight into the importance of acceptance, and how it really is the precondition to meaningful change and improvement in life. Acceptance isn’t always easy or comfortable, but it leads to improvement. Denial is often easier, but the consequences are always worse.
