The institute has been set up by Liver Foundation, West Bengal and is situated on the southern fringes of Kolkata on land donated by the state government.

r liver and gastrointestinal disease. The present building is intended to house a state of the art Hepatology and GI services. It will house a 6 bed ITU and two theatres equipped to carry out all gastrointestinal/hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries inclusive of liver transplantation. We intend to roll out a full fledged 100 bed inpatient service in stages. The hospital was inaugurated on 27 February, 2016 and the outpatient,endoscopy, radiology and laboratory services have already been made functional in phases. The Liver Foundation, West Bengal, wishes to address the question of equity and access to health care. Its objective is to develop an institute that provides the best possible care in liver and gastrointestinal diseases, conducts global-standard research in liver diseases and trains health-care personnel in the relevant disciplines - but all at a price that does not inflict pain on the patient. It proposes a revenue model that will be beneficial to the population irrespective of the patients economic background. Those who can afford will receive care at a cost that can keep the wheels of the institute running. Such a model of cross subsidisation can work only if the institute is built with funds that come without the "string of return on investment". We wish to assert that we do not accept the idea of "health care as an industry". We hope to involve millions who, believing in our vision, will step forward to donate or make endowments to bring the idea to fruition. No doubt we will have to raise loans from financial institutions. But the less tight this financial noose round our necks, the more elbow room we will have in serving people.

Yesterday, Team IILDS paid a visit to Taj Vivanta, Kasba, Kolkata, for the event, "Protect Liver, Preserve Life" organised in collaboration with Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited and Signus. The evening turned out to be incredible as doctors and marketers came together for the greater good! The Lectures by our doctors focused on keeping the liver healthy and freeing it from the clutches of FLDs.

It was a 360-degree discussion encompassing the perspectives of genetics, public health, radiology-based interventions, hepatology, endoscopy and surgery in the fight against FLDs. The takeaway? Holistic enrichment and a vision for a healthier nation in the days to come.

Collaboration is always a win, and we look forward to such opportunities all the time to do something better through knowledge and through diligence.
