Honoring National Purple Heart Day 💜
Today, we pause to honor the heroes who carried the weight of battle so we wouldn’t have to. Their strength and sacrifice deserve more than recognition, they deserve our deepest gratitude. Today and every day, we honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their unwavering service.

⚖️ Office of Integrity & Compliance
The guardians of "doing the right thing." They keep us transparent, accountable, and ethical — protecting both our mission and our Veterans. 🛡️
Here's how they make it happen:
✅ Monitor — They audit and review programs across KCVA to catch compliance risks early, before they become bigger problems
✅ Educate — They train staff on regulations, policies, and ethical standards so doing the right thing is second nature, not an afterthought
✅ Investigate — When concerns are raised, they look into them thoroughly and fairly, protecting both Veterans and staff
✅ Advise — They serve as a trusted resource across the facility, helping leadership and employees navigate gray areas with clarity and confidence

Why does this matter for Veterans? Because integrity isn't just a value on a poster — it's what ensures every decision, every dollar, and every policy serves Veterans first. Compliance protects the resources and trust that make quality care possible, and it gives every employee a safe way to raise concerns — whether that's a hotline, a direct conversation, or a formal report — without fear of retaliation.

The result? A facility where accountability isn't just enforced from the top down — it's built into the culture, so Veterans can trust that KCVA is doing right by them, every single time.

Today, we had the privilege of honoring centenarian Robert Drost, a proud Korean War veteran whose courage, valor, and selfless sacrifice helped defend the freedoms we enjoy today. Thomas Kirchhoefer, Chief of Chaplain Service, presented Robert with the award on behalf of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs as part of the VA Centenarian Recognition Program. This special initiative by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes Veterans who have reached or are close the remarkable age of 100, honoring their lifetime of service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy. Heroes like Robert remind us that true greatness is found in service to others. His unwavering dedication to our nation and his extraordinary life inspire us all. Thank you, Robert Drost, for your bravery, your sacrifice, and your legacy. We are forever grateful for your service and honored to celebrate a true American hero.

🛟 Patient Safety
When it comes to caring for our Veterans, safety isn't a checkbox — it's a culture. Patient Safety works every day to make sure that culture is real, visible, and constantly improving. 💙
Here's how they do it:
✅ Process Reviews — They take a close look at how care is delivered, catching potential risks before they become real problems
✅ System Improvements — When something isn't working as safely as it should, they help redesign it — because safety should be built into the system, not left to chance
✅ Just Culture Training — This is huge: Just Culture creates an environment where staff feel safe speaking up, reporting mistakes, and asking questions — without fear of blame. That means problems get caught and fixed faster, instead of being hidden
✅ Continuous Learning — Every near-miss or incident becomes a chance to learn and improve, not just a box to check
Why does this matter so much? Because a truly safe environment isn't just about avoiding errors — it's about empowering every team member, from the newest hire to the most seasoned provider, to speak up, ask questions, and put Veterans first without hesitation. That's the kind of safety net every Veteran deserves.

Paula Roychaudhuri, Executive Director, KCVA, presented Rachel Brantley with her retirement certificate on Aug. 5. After 35 years of dedicated service to the KCVA, Brantley is retiring. She began her VA career in 1992 in the ROI department and soon became Secretary to the MSS Chief. Her exceptional professionalism, skill, and attention to detail quickly stood out, leading her to serve as Secretary to the Chief of Staff and later as Administrative Officer for Surgery.

In 2003, Brantley joined Radiology as the department secretary, where she has been the glue holding operations together for the past 23 years. Her steady guidance, resilience, and unwavering commitment have shaped the department and supported countless staff and Veterans alike.

Brantley plans to continue residing in Missouri with her husband and three adult children. She shares that she will miss everyone and describes her departure as bittersweet—but with a smile and a twinkle in her eye, she says she is ready to go.

⚙️ Systems Redesign
Great care isn't just about what we do — it's about how we do it. Systems Redesign is the team behind the scenes constantly asking: "How can we make this better, safer, and more efficient for our Veterans?" 🔧
Here's how they make an impact:
✅ Evaluate — They dig into current processes to find bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or gaps in care
✅ Monitor — They track data and outcomes to see what's actually working (and what isn't)
✅ Implement — They roll out real, practical changes — think shorter wait times, smoother handoffs between departments, and streamlined access to services
✅ Sustain — Because a good fix that doesn't last isn't really a fix — they build changes to stick for the long haul

The result? Care that's not only high-quality in the moment, but backed by systems designed to keep getting better over time. It's process improvement with a purpose: making sure every Veteran's experience is as smooth, safe, and effective as possible.
