Carpal Boss or Ganglion? 🤔

Not every lump on the back of the wrist is a ganglion cyst!

A ganglion is a fluid-filled cyst (commonly from the scapholunate joint) that can change in size and may come and go.

A carpal boss is a firm, bony prominence usually located at the base of the 2nd/3rd metacarpals. It’s immobile and won’t disappear on its own.

Although they can look similar, they have different causes and may require different management. A proper assessment can help determine what’s going on and the best treatment options 🙌🏼

Scapholunate instability… Ulnar deviation can increase widening of the scapholunate interval in an unstable or torn scapholunate ligament.
As the scaphoid flexes and the lunate extends, the gap becomes more apparent, which is why stress views on imaging can help identify dynamic instability.
