One of the most dangerous times for a mother and her newborn is in the days and weeks following childbirth.

One of the things that sets the Sarobidy Maternity Center apart is what happens after delivery.

In Madagascar, postpartum home visits are virtually non-existent. But every mother and newborn in our program receives 2–3 home visits during the first two weeks after birth, before returning to the center for their postpartum follow-up.

During these visits, our midwives monitor the health of both mother and baby, support breastfeeding, answer questions, and often identify complications before they become life-threatening.

It’s one of the many ways we provide comprehensive care—from early pregnancy through six months postpartum—and one of the reasons we’re seeing such incredible outcomes for mothers and babies.

Sometimes, the most important care happens after birth. ❤️

In honor of International Biodiversity Day, themed “𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕”, we celebrate the urgent need to safeguard and restore the world’s unique ecosystems.

Madagascar, an isolated island, is home to flora and fauna of which up to 90% of species are endemic. However, extensive deforestation driven by slash-and-burn agriculture, charcoal production, and logging has devastated over 80% of its forests. This deforestation disrupts rainfall patterns, lowers water tables, erodes topsoil, creates desert-like landscapes, and damages coral reefs. ARC in partnership with Red Island Restoration and local Malagasy communities, are planting thousands of trees to restore forests, addressing poverty and biodiversity protection.

One branch of this project, Tahiriniala Nature Park, is among the last forest canopies in Mahajanga, serving as an animal rescue and rehabilitation center. Mahajanga faces significant challenges from illegal plant and animal trafficking driven by demand for Madagascar’s unique biodiversity. The Nature Park provides a sanctuary for species such as Rakiky, a common brown lemur and matriarch of a growing family that roams freely within the canopied oasis. The park also shelters 37 critically endangered radiated and spider tortoises, both endemic to Madagascar, which were rescued from traffickers. Over the past decade, these tortoises—some surrendered voluntarily and others seized from smugglers attempting to transport 28 small tortoises in backpacks—have been rehabilitated. Most, initially dehydrated and starving, have been revived and now thrive in habitats designed to mimic their natural environment. Several have begun laying eggs, resulting in the birth of multiple baby radiated tortoises.

Another majestic species is the rare 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘺𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 baobab, with only one known grove of four trees worldwide. In 2012, a tornado caused significant losses to this grove. At the time, only two of the four trees were producing pods, and unfortunately, the larger of these was also destroyed. Initial efforts to propagate from collected seeds appeared unsuccessful, but 30 new trees have since sprouted and are thriving in strategic locations, including Tahiriniala Nature Park.

To protect Madagascar’s unique biodiversity, we must act urgently. Support community tree planting initiatives like “𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲” to reverse deforestation. Strengthen efforts against illegal species trafficking to save endangered lemurs, tortoises, and rare plants like Adansonia madagascariensis boenyensis at Tahiriniala Nature Park. Investing in local communities promotes economic stability and environmental care, supporting International Biodiversity Day’s goals of sustainability and harmony with nature.

Six babies. One unforgettable week. 💛

The Sarobidy Maternity Center was full of life—three babies in one late-night rush, two more just minutes apart, and one determined little girl born on the way to us!

2 boys. 4 girls. 6 strong mamas—all now home, healthy, and bonding well.

We’re praising God for His protection and provision, even as we continue trusting Him to meet ongoing needs and grow the ministry. What a beautiful reminder of the dream to expand and serve even more families.
